NEC and new drives (label flash)

NEC and new drives (label flash)

I just finished reading the entire press release of the upcoming drives supporting this technology and it seems really in interesting and useful. Originally I would have bought a light scribe drive if the technology was a little more refined (I think of it as more of a novelty than a useful aspect).

From the press release it seems that it will only take 5 minutes to create a label on the disc (versus the 30 minutes or so on light scribe drives, thus 16x labeling?). This is what takes the technology from a novelty to actually usability is the speed. The other interesting thing is the technology of label flash is somewhat a continuation of disc tattoo from Yamaha (as it allows blank region of the write surface to contain images).

Well here are my questions:

-who will make media with a compatible writing surface (any speculation)
- will the technology be open source or have rapid integration (eg: upcoming Nero support)
- will you get one of these drives if they are as good as promised? (Personally I will since sharpies and yuki don’t get along with labeling discs ^^)
-will this be another fad like disc tattoo?

Oh yes, thx NEC for supporting DVD ram for once ^^ (i heart you once again)

I suppose this new "label flash" will of course not work on the already existing medias (with a surface designed for LightScribe)

they question is: will it work on 'regular' media (like Yamaha's Disc T@too) did ?

It states in the article posted that you can tatoo the bottom of the disc as well just like the old yamaha. I was already interested in the NEC 4550 because of DVD RAM now I really want a new NEC to replace my 3540.
