Maxell DVD+R DL

Postby seaegg on Tue Sep 27, 2005 1:44 am

I saw a couple Maxell DVD+R DL discs in London Drugs over the weekend for the blockbuster price of $15.99 CAD each. I laughed so hard people in the store must have thought I was quite mad. I assume Maxell really don't want to sell this media but manufactured them for display purposes only. Especially when you consider Verbatim DL discs can be had for half that price. I was totally amazed at the price to be honest.

Do they add a recording industry levy on top of that like I saw for CD's in Vancouver?

Not sure but if they do that only makes the price even more outrageous.

You'd have to be thick in the head to use Memorex DVD+RDL for anything though... the media is crap. Certainly the worst quality Ritek DVD+RDL I've used, and Ritek DVD+RDL media is crap to begin with.

Maxell DVD+RDL is verbatim MID and newer stock is Ricoh MID, but considering how slowly it moves at 2x-3x the price of the next most expensive media, I don't think you'll run into new stock for a while

By the way, I've mentioned this price problem to Maxell already.

The levy is only on audio recording media. So, CD-Rs, Audio Cassettes, and MiniDiscs.

Believe it or not I've burned 24 Memorex DVD+R DL discs so far and all of them play flawlessly. Now I don't know if it's because my Oppo has really good error correction or not but I don't have a problem with them. My 1640 refuses to burn them but my Pio 109 seems to burn them without a problem. Obviously if I could get Verbatims at Memorex prices I'd buy the Verbatims but...........

You're lucky!!

I've burned about 15 or 20... and all the results were horrible, and 3 or 4 of them were complete coasters (these were personal burns I made, all burned on the PX-716SA). All the discs were burned at 2.4x, despite the PX-716SA being able to burn them at 4x.

Hello!

Ritek DL-media seems to be very crappy.

But in Germany you don´t have much alternatives, only Verbatim and Ritek are avaible.

Never seen here CMC, Prodisc or some other manufacturer.

BTW, someone knows which manufacturer TDK uses, maybe CMC?
Benq DW 1640 and 1650 , Plextor PX-755, Pioneer BDR-208 and 209D, LG GH24NSC0, LG BH16NS40 and 16NS55, Liteon ihas 124F and 324F, Pioneer DVR-215 and S21, Samsung SH-224DB and 224GB, and some more

Nope, TDK is using Ritek as well. At least the first ones that I saw.

I just had a pair of Maxell Canada managers here with me, so I showed them this thread (specifically the first post, which I read out loud to them).

I can't promise changes... but I'm working very hard with them, and I've been told that my suggestions have been taken back as far as the higher ups in Japan on more then one occasion.

even if you burned Memorex DVD+R DL media with success, the actual burn quality was probably terrible and dont expect them to last that long.

While I can't comment on how long they will last, I can say that the Ritek-made Memorex DVD+R DL I burned in my NEC 2500A actually scanned very well in my Lite-On drive. I was surprised at how good the burn quality was.

That said, the discs won't play in one of my DVD players, but plays fine in the other one.
