I'm sure it'll be $10K or more, but so was the first DVD-R. By 2010 we'll all have one.

1.5mm thick, how does that compare to a DVD?

I don't think this technology is aimed at the consumer at all. It's great for those that need to do large data archiving.. but for Joe Sixpack, looking to burn his home movies or backup his Elvis collection.. it's overkill.

Today you're right.
But, tomorrow, who's to say.

I'm stitching my 1st GigaPixel array [175 - 8MP images], as we speak. I'll have to downsize it to fit in the 4GigaByte TIFF file limitation. Our thirst for storage will always continue to grow, always has, always will.

Yeah, for the future.. who knows.

I think BR or HD is going to be the defacto standard for the next 5+ years though. Who knows what we're gonna see after that.

Holographic disc based storage has been on the map at least 8 years, and it's not any closer to being on the consumer market.

It can easily take another 8 or never hit the market at all (get trampled by something even bigger or more importantly more reliable and cheaper to manufacture).

But yes, it is promising and I hope we'll get there sooner than later :)

To bad, I think you're right. Just saw a number on the media price: $120 for a 300GB blank. That's about the same as a 300GB HDD and you don't need a $15,000 box to burn the critter.
