What did you get for the Holidays?

Postby Ian on Sun Dec 25, 2005 7:59 pm

Yeah, I know Hanukkah is just starting but those of us that celebrate Christmas can brag (or complain) about what we got this year.

Believe it or not, I didn't get a lot of clothes this year. What I did get is for snowboarding or Star Wars t-shirts. I also got some Star Wars and Transformers toys including Cybertron Optimus Prime (from my parents no less).

The kid got a pile of clothes and toys. I have no idea where we're going to put it all. He also got this huge ass ride on horse from my dad. It's big enough for me to ride on. #-o

Here's the tally so far:

Mother -> PJ's
Aunt+Uncle (Father's side) -> PJ's and Dean Koontz novel
Other Uncle (Father's side) -> $30 cash
Sister+Brother In Law -> $20 G/C for HMV
Girlfriend -> New fan for beside my bed (I need a fan to sleep, and my current one SUCKS!)
Roomate -> Bottle o' Kahlua (EXCELLENT!!!)
AviationWiz -> Mr. & Mrs. Smith (DVD) and 2 manga's I need for my collection
Friend (Antonia) -> 1 metal puzzel game (solved in 5-10 seconds...) + Book of Sudoku puzzles (using it at work for when I need something to keep me busy)
Ritek USA -> Accidentaly shipped me 50pcs of their 4x DVD-RDL instead of 5pcs.... :D Gotta love those decimal places!!
UPS -> Free shipping on my present to myself (it was late and I got a service refund for ~$50 USD)
Me -> I bought myself a Nintendo DS w/MarioKart.... awesome system!!

On the whole I think it's a good haul.... still, I got more PJ's then I expected, and much fewer calenders (last year I got like 4 calenders!!).
Punch Cards -> Paper Tape -> Tape Drive -> 8" Floppy Diskette -> 5 1/4" Floppy Diskette -> 3 1/2" "Flippy" Diskette -> CD-R -> DVD±R -> BD-R

Ahhh Kahlua, one of my favorites. Good thing you live far away or you might find me drunk in your kitchen drinking white russians :D

The wife was kind enough to get my hint and gave me a Samsung VR325 set top recorder. =D>

It doesn't matter what I did or didn't get.

The burning question: What did Monte get Jenn?

Now, here is what I did get:
From my wife: A money clip deal because I was having trouble keeping track of all my money.
From the others: It was really good stuff.

From my self (to replace the Samsung 17" LCD monitor and the ATI Radeon AIW 9600XT video card):
1. A Samsung 20" LCD monitor, 204T
2. A Hauppauge WinTV PVR-350 pci card.
3. A Leadtek A6200TDH-128 AGP video card.

So I bought the AIW card early this year for TV capture of NASCAR races and then burn them out to DVD.
Well, that thing is very unstable. Always freezing or failing to come up on schedule record, particularly out of hibernation. I was always testing it, uninstalling - reinstalling it and repairing it. I was spending more time fooling with it that recording with it.

Furthermore, we are going to reconfigure this room and probably do some more TV watching in it. The 17" monitor is a liitle to small for that, but being a rather small room the 20" monitor will do just fine and I didn't want to have two screens, monitor and TV in here.
Now, one should really have a DVI input for a 20" LCD and the AIW 9600XT has analog output only, so that card had to go.

The Leadtek AGP card has a DVI output, so that is in.
The Hauppage will give me the TV capture and viewing function that the AIW couldn't do reliably.

TCAS: Got that Samsung 205T at the Lakewood CC for $435, AMIR. I love it. Deal good through 12/31. 10-4?

Note: Roller Derby comes back to TV Jan 2nd, I'll test out the TV capture on that!

have been so busy lately this is the first time I have been home since the begining of November. I drive a semi now. I didnt get much electronic gadgets this year. I did get remarried again in November to my exwife who goes on the road with me. Anyway heres my list.

Mom-.50 muzzleloader rifle,wilson 3W cellphone booster kit,gun vise,
Dad- S&W 500 revolver (awesome gift worlds largest handgun), reloading supplies
Wife-drug free and on her medications and lots of special unmentionables
Rest of family-new wallet,boots,12 V coffee pot and mugs,blank TY dvds,cash and gift certificates
Myself- Palm Treo 650 and about $500 worth of addons for it.
The gun from my dad threw me for a loop. Me and my dad have been fighting all year. he has called the cops on me a few times for fist fights with him over my mom. They are in the middle of a divorce and fight like mad and I back my mother. He went with us to go Christmas shopping for my little sisters and I had to stop at a gun shop for some 10mm bullets and he went in with me and I still was not talking to him at that point and he offered to buy me any gun I wanted if I would just try to be nice to him this year. So I tok him up on his offer and let him spend $1200 on me Saturday. I am now getting along with him just fine lets see how long it lasts though. first time he gets into it with my mother or little sisters violently deal is off.

Cycling gear (socks and a do-rag, hopefully I'll be riding across Iowa in late July this year as part of my 1,000-2,000 annual miles on the road bike)

Griffin iTrip 2.0 radio tuner for my iPod 3G (currently not working very well with my Kenwood car stereo, I have to find out if it's the iTrip or the stereo that's at fault)

DLo Action Jacket and Panasonic jogger earclip headphones for my iPod (new gym membership, need some tunes while I lose a few pounds gained due to my wife's excellent cooking)

Nintendo Gameboy Advance SP and the three GBA Castlevania series games from Konami (always been hooked on that series)

jeans and other assorted clothing from L.L. Bean from my loving wife (who, bless her soul, has found the few clothing stores I like that also carry Large-Tall sizes)

EDIT: With the Christmas money my wife and I received from a grandparent, we replaced our failing Sony DVD player (causes speakers of any device it is plugged into to buzz/hum) with a Philips player that also does DivX and MPEG-4. W00t!

And best of all, a great time with a loving family celebrating Christmas. Worth more than all gifts mentioned before it.

Also bought 4 spindles of Fuji TY 48x cd-r's that I found in my Zehrs grocery store. $17.98 CDN for 50 pack, not bad at all.

Lots of good stuff everyone!

Most importantly, I got to visit my sisters, father, aunt and uncle, cousins, etc. In terms of material goods, I got a blanket (good for me since I am keeping the thermostat at 62 F / 16.5 C this winter), an accent lamp made from a Japanese kimono silk-screen template, and a calendar.

As for what I didn't get, and this is quite important too, I didn't get sick. It isn't uncommon on these holiday trips for me to get sick because I am run ragged with constant driving, sleeping on uncomfortable sofas, staying up too late and geting up too early, and seeing many disease-bearing young children... #-o But this time I was just exhausted, not sick. :D

Actually, I didn't get sick this Christmas either! I don't know if a single December has gone by in my life where I haven't gotten sick at least once... but THIS time I made it though! And lot's of co-workers were sick, and lot's of family members have been sick. Even people who are usually MUCH healthier then I have been sick. But I have not been sick :D
