HP, owner of the Lightscribe patents, and a big member of the DVD+RW Alliance, for some reason has not deemed it time for DVD-R media to have lightscribe compatible surface yet....

Ahhh....so that is why...this is also the reason this product is going nowhere. They can't give away the stuff at Future Shop the manager by me says. Wife paid $60 Canadian for the 1655. Lightscribe is nice, but it is now obvious to me that dullards and fools are running the show. Too bad....

WHAT!? How the hell she paid such a low price? I saw the 1655 yesterday at FutureShop and it was 179$, of course not in sale but how come a new drive would come on the market with a 119$ rebate?

Maybe the price wasn't entered right inthe system and she got it for the price of the 1640 they had a lot in stock?

I would go buy one right now if it was 60$... when I saw 179$ I was surprised it was a litter high and I was looking for the next rebate before buying.

At one time HP's CD-R media was made by TY but I think these days most of it is made by CMC.

Yeah, CMC has an exclusive contract with HP to produce their media. Which means it can be good.... but CMC doesn't have to try to impress them either (since HP can't run anywhere else!), so it can also be a dumping ground.
