DW1655/Nero Ripping Trouble

Postby TangledThorns on Mon Jan 09, 2006 1:33 pm

I just installed a new DW1655 DVD burner Friday and up until last night I was able to Rip DVDs just fine. I keep getting a driver error, not a cyclic error. I lowered speed setting from 16x to 4x to no avail.

Another issue I found is when I play a DVD back through Nero's showtime the video looks fine but through other players like Windows Media & Real Player I get distorted video or blockiness. I dont think its a hardware issue, could it be firmware or Nero software? Any help would be great.

I upgraded from a 4x TDK 420n and never had this kind of trouble with it.

I'm seeing other reports of weird problems like this with the DW1655. I don't know what's causing it, but I'll be taking it up with BenQ shortly now that CES is over.

At least I'm not the only one. I'm going to further troubleshoot by upgrading the Nero software or reinstalling it. Its weird how it can run like a dream then go crappy.

Damn.. let me know, I still have a few days to return it!

Or you think a firmware can fix that?

Not sure what the problem is entirely... But I'm working on it!

I dont think thats related. Issues I run into with the 1655 is:

1. Suddenly unable to Rip DVDs.

2. Every player but Nero's Showtime has distortion.

I already emailed Benq but havn't heard anything back other than the auto-reply.

Ok. After uninstalling the software to no avail I went to my device settings and uninstalled the DVD drive. Rebooted and all is good.

The last thing I did before this started was changing the read speed in Nero and I think that caused it to wig out. Still, this shouldnt of happened and I'm wary of toying with the read speeds again.

And about 5min before I was going to write that e-mail to BenQ (I just got home).

It would be great if you could reproduce the problem and solve it again the same way so we will almost sure it was that and also the problem could be sent to proper customer support for analysis.

 This is a known way to switch from PIO mode to DMA mode 2.
This has nothing to do with the BenQ, but with Windows...
Check here : http://www.cdrinfo.com/forum/tm.asp?m=81131
With XP SP2 there is a reg tips than can reduce DMA mode 2 => PIO IDE automatic downgrad after 6 fails... After the tips it's only after 6 consecutive fails.
