Anywhere to download sample MPEG-4 videos?

Postby Ian on Sat Jan 21, 2006 3:35 pm

I'm trying to see if a DVD player supports various MPEG-4 codecs and I'd like to save myself from encoding a bunch of videos. Is there anywhere I can buy or download a test suite like this?

Don't forget Apple's H.264 MPEG-4 sample files:

Thanks guys. I also downloaded some from the Nero Digital and DivX websites. I've already found that the stupid player only supports movie files with the extensions AVI, DIVX and DIV.

Also what about audio files in Dolby Digital 2 and 5.1 channel?

Can't you just pull those off of the soundtrack of pretty much any DVD? Or is this something different? I guess I should already know the answer to that question, but... I've been gone too long. #-o

lol..

I need to check but I think this thing only supports audio files with MP3 and WMA extensions. I don't know if it will even play WAV.

I'm out of my element here, but I did try extracting the audio stream from a DVD using the old DVD Decrypter. Set it to IFO mode, then choose the "Stream Processing" tab, check the "Enable Stream Processing" box, check the stream you wish to extract, and finally set the copy mode to "Demux":

After you have ripped the file, rename the .VOB file to .AC3, .AVI or .WAV or whatever. The players usually seem smart enough to figure out what it really is regardless of the extension. Which leads to the question, what is it, really? I'm pretty sure it is Dolby Digital AC3, but I could be wrong.

I also stumbled across a site with a few 5.1 AC3 sample files:

There are too many formats for me to keep track of all of them, although I would like to.

Thanks again! I'll try out a few of those sample files before I go nuts creating my own.
