LiteOn SHM-165H6S Disk problems

I've got one of these recently but both CD's and DVD-R's I burn come out of poor quality. They either won't load or they skip badly. I've updated the firmware to latest HS06. I'm using Nero for CD's and I've tried a couple of things for DVD's but continue to get the same problems. The drive is on it's own IDE connection as Master. I have an NEC 3500A on the same computer as the master on another IDE connection and it works great. I'm about to send the drive back as I've ruined about 10 disks but thought someone might have a suggestion first.

What media are you using? Have you tried other types and/or slower writing speeds?
