Craig, Nero Updates and bit torrent, why not?

Postby bigblu91 on Mon Dec 12, 2005 3:39 pm

The title says it all. I searched the forum for this suggestion and found nothing.
With the definite need to update Nero 7 regularly, PLEASE create a torrent. You know you would save on bandwith and deliver the updates to many who know how to use it in a MUCH timelier fashion. I'm sure this has to have been brought up before inside Nero so "Why not?".

Not all file sharing is illegal as we all know. Should we do away with Windows and other software just because some people use pirated copies. Bit torrnet just plain works. Please give the users who paid their money for usable software an opportunity to get the needed updates easier.

Working up to a 26.5 kb(started out under 1 kb) d/l speed is not good, especially on a 3 meg connection.

Well, for one, we pay nero for their program and updates. Why the hell should they pass the buck to their customers by forcing them to upload their (Nero's) stuff (the basic premise of bittorrent)? If anything, Nero should upgrade their servers so that all can get decent speeds for their updates. Pfft, plus you are complaining about 26.5KBps. That should take, what, 15 minutes instead of 2? I am stuck with 56k modem speeds. It would take me HOURS to get it. Be thankful for what you have :p

I have felt your pain. If Charter doesn't keep with a deal, I'll go back to dialup. I agree Nero should upgrade their servers. It would be nice if they would offer the torrent ALONG with the way they do it now and let users decide. Hopefully users wouldn't be leeches after getting the added speed.

As far as the time it took, as I said I had to work up to a 26.5. The download took over an hour when all said and done. I know that is better than dialup and I should be more patient. I think patience is going to be needed with Nero in general.

Good idea but I don't think it will work. Gold star for thinking outside the box.

Supposedly we're going to see the new update process at the end of the month. Should help out with smaller downloads.

My advice, don't download the day they release an update. Next day, servers are fine.

Torrent... only thing that concerns me is that I'm downloading from an untrusted source for licensed software and using third party software to accomplish it. I doubt Ahead wants to run into liability issues if something happens. They also have no influence as to what the client is supposed to do, where it's going... how often updates are released... not to mention security issues.

Just a few thoughts.

It's my understanding that the torrent tracker controls the downloading. If the source is from Ahead, then it should not be able to be changed as long as you are using the torrent from Ahead and people using that tracker. Maybe I'm confused about how it works.

What I want to work is Nero 7 and be able to get the update in a timely fashion. I know they are SUPPOSE to have an integrated download but we all know they released it knowing it wasn't ready.

No major company has taken to the torrent idea. I'm not sure why.

We are of course working to improve our Server speeds. We have already done some work in this area.

And of course, we are working to provide a better update solution. Torrent will not be one of those solutions though.

It looks like they took bigblu19's advice. The latest update is now available via bittorrent:

Wow. Talk about the left hand not knowing what the right is doing.

I think this is a good move, though. Nero updates are impossible to get the first few days. not to mention, the more legitimate uses there are for Bittorrent the better! :)

Ian-- that link doesn't seem to work. Maybe the 'no_yt' version isn't seeded yet? It eventually just sends me to the main Nero page. (I noticed it's the same link as on Nero's mirrors page)

Use the BT link I posted in this thread. This is where the Nero Update BT link use to take you to. I'm not sure why it doesn't now.

Don't those have the Yahoo Toolbar (Which I don't want) as part of the install?

Yes, but when you start the install, the very 1st thing it tries to install is Yahoo. It asks you to accept some agreement. If you decline, it doesn't install anything yahoo and goes on with the Nero install.

cool-- I didn't realise that you could decline the toolbar if you selected to download that version... good to know.
