RAM media where 2 get and how much?

Postby M17 on Mon Mar 27, 2006 10:10 pm

Best place to buy quality DVD-RAM media.
Is 5x twice as fast as 2x?
Is double sided worth the extra price?

Thanks

where are you located?

5x is roughly twice as fast yes.

Whether double sided is worth the extra cost is up to you.

US- Michigan.
I see 5x 4.7gb media for $6. Seems expensive.
9.4gb start in double digits

Hrm, that DOES seem expensive!! Should be more like $5 and $9 (and that's Canadian$ !!!) for Maxell DVD-RAM (5x single sided, and 3x double sided).

Not sure who to recommend in the US though... maybe Shop4tech ?

Surprisingly, Shop4tech doesn't carry it. Here's what I found on Pricegrabber for Maxell 5x DVD-RAM:

This is tad off topic, but Maxell 12X DVD-RAM is out in Japan! http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=174568

Well now I know that there even is 12x ram media. Thanks for info buck.

Dvd-Ram media availablity sucks right now, Amazon has Maxell 9.4gb for $17, that's a single disc. Pricegrabber does not give much choice.

There seems to be so 2-3x media 5pk for $10 +sh

Still 5x is very expensive.

Hey my brand new 5x ram drive that is arriving tomorrow is absolete.
Luck me.
Is anyone shipping 12x dvd-ram drives?
What are the chances of current ram drives being firmware upgradeable to new 12x writing speed.

LG and Panasonic both have drives capable of 12x DVD-RAM writing. If I remember right, they should be shipping very soon, if they're not already.

I don't think existing drives are going to be upgradable due to the differences in the new media. I think I read somewhere that the new 12x DVD-RAM media isn't even readable in older drives.

That sucks. Not being able to read 12x ram disc in current drives.
I wonder if there is any technical limitations of not being able to upgrade 5x dvd-ram drives to 12x.
They can spin fast enough.
And it is the same base technology, same laser type?
Any how what's the difference 12x media won't be widely available in US until next year probably.
Since I already have to give my arms for 5x media, I won't be able to give my legs for 12x media. I sort of need them.

5x DVD-RAM is *SO* easy to get for me.... but trying to get a computer store or retail outlet to carry it is nearly impossible :o

It's not that retail outlets don't carry DVD-RAM. It's just that they insist on carrying old, crappy 2x or, if you're lucky, 3x media.

Very few retailer carry even the crapy 2-3x ram media.
They are hard to find in retail.
dolphinius-rex care to share your source?

Hey how does dvd-ram work with regular dvd-rom drives on windows 2k/xp.
Is reading/accessing the disc cause any problems?
Do you need any special drivers?
Or is it out of the box support assuming that dvd-rom can read dvd-ram media.

Thanks

Here's one e-tailer in Canada I could use:
http://www.blankmedia.ca/proddetail3.asp?id=667

Although in reality, I'd be going to Maxell direct, and not to them... but I did help them GET the product

Thanks dolphinius-rex.
I checked it out, 2 weeks lead time for cheapest shipping option which is still fairly expnesive is no good. I would have to buy more media and I just want few to check out the the ram thing works. Thanks anyway.

I think right now 3pk Panasonic 2-3x at amazon for $9 is not that bad, if you're trying out the prime free shipping thing.
Otherwise Circuit City stock the same media in 5pk for $13+sales tax.
Maxell 5x for $6 at buy.com with free ship over $25 orders is not that bad.
All discs are 4.7gb.

I don't have a DVD-RAM compatible drive currently, but I've seen both single and double sided DVD-RAM at Microcenter before. They had both MIJ and MIU codes (MIU = Made in the USA).
