Here's the latest hard drive deal from Outpost. They currently have a Seagate 300GB Parallel ATA drive for $89.99. No rebates.

Newegg wants $118 and theirs is OEM and not retail like Outpost's.

500GB for $229!!! I think I'll get two, I'm low on disk space right now (really!).

What makes thinks your (Mator 500GB) is a better deal?. For the price yours any one could buy 3 Seagate and that mean 3X300GB=900GB vesus 500GB.

I didn't say better deal, just that I like it better. The 300GB drives are at the "sweet spot" right now; but for some (like me), have a large number of drives is not really an option (due to lack of controller ports). A couple of those puppies would bump my storage up considerably, while not needing a large number of them.

I agree with you on lack of controller but just realize how long would take to defrag or reformat 500 GB or even 300GB drive. I have 4 drives in my computer 2 ATA and 2 SATA with larger drive being 200 GB all Maxtor.

Formatting isn't a problem; just use Quick Format. As for defragging, I use PerfectDisk, which is much faster than Disk keeper - and it does a complete defrag in one pass. Plus, I keep my partitions fairly small. For DVD backup, I use one for compressed images (which I "defrag" by reformatting), and one for the raw rips - with the cluster size set to 64KB (the max) it reduces the frag level. I only use 64KB cluster size on partitions for DVDs; since DVDs are just a few large files it works better. It would be horrible for a general use drive, though...

And hey, $229 for a drive that's normally $329 is a hell of a deal...even if the 300GB's are better $/MB.
