Which on is quieter?

Postby behr on Thu Apr 27, 2006 5:34 pm

Hi:

I am looking for a quiet good quality DVD reader/burner. I will mostly burn DVD-RW, DVD-R, CD-R and CD-RW media. 8X DVD-R, 6x DVD-RW and 16x CD-R/RW burning speeds are enough for me. I do not think I will use DVD-RAM or lightscribe/labelflash.

I was thinking BenQ DW1650 first, but then after some research, it seemed to be loud. I narrowed down to Pioneer DVR-111 and LG GSA-4167B. I do not like to use any software to slow down the DVD. Which one do you think is quieter? I have Pioneer DVR-103 which has a pitchy sound. I am looking for something slightly quieter than this.

In the meantime, I do not need the latest fastest burners. If you know any quiet good quality reader/burner at 8x DVD-R, 6x DVD-RW, 16x CD-R/RW speeds, I would appreciate if you could let me know. That might be cheaper too.

Thanks.

Mosdt drives are quiet when not using full speed.

My 8x-LG was also quiet, but the 16x are louder when used at high speed, if u only read 8x it should be quiet enough.

If u read/write with burning-software u should be able to choose the max-speed and dont need to use slowdown-software

I do not like to run software at the background. Would it be possible to set it in the firmware?

I could buy older models. I am not going to burn faster than 8x DVD anyway. Although, sometimes I may decide to burn faster if I am in a hurry.

Also, I am guessing newer models have better error correction, although I might be wrong.

The LG GSA 10A is not the fastest reader and that´s the reason why it is a quiet drive, maybe this should be your choice :)

LG H10 is reading DVR-R and DVD-ROM at 16x. Does it have a rip lock? Why do say it is slow?

You have BenQ 1640. It sounds like a quality burner. How loud is that one?

I will be archiving in DVD-R. So, DVD-R burning quality is the most important. Which drive has the best DVD-R burning quality?

Thanks.

LG

http://www.cdfreaks.com/article/272/3

See ?

The 1640 IMHO is quiet for it´s speed, but it reads +R/-R and DVD-Video @16x, so it´s not what u looking for, I guess. U need to use a slowdown-software

The LG looks not bad with -R, the Benq 1650/55 looks pretty good with -R-media from good til midrange-media

My Pioneer DVR-111D is quite a bit louder than my 1650 or 1655. It's actually IMO a rather loud burner(the Pioneer), as that's not a concern of mine I'm happy with it. It did make a mess of the first Verb +DL I tried at 8X with the new 1.19 firmware though.

are you comparing the burners at their loudest setting/speed or the quietest possible setting when watching dvd-s. I too am interested in the noise, mainly how it will perform in a HTPC as a dvd reader for watching movies.

I'm very pleased with NEC ND-4550A. Extremely good and fast reader, very good writing quality for both CD and DVD media. At slower speeds it's reasonably quiet, though for DVD movie playback you have to slow it down with AnyDVD for instance.

I was thinking of BenQ 1650 at first for its high quality. But, then I read many reviews that it is loud. Then, I started to look for other burners. Pioneer and LG seemed to be quieter. Maybe because they are slower. I do not mind having a 8X DVD reader if it is quiet. I do not want to run a software at the background. If I could change it on the firmware, that would be the best.

People are saying their BenQ fails after a few weeks. So, it seems BenQ is not that reliable. Pioneer seems to be more reliable. I am using my Pioneer for 4 years. What do you think?

Are you sure Pioneer 111 is louder than BenQ 1650?

I have Sony CDR175E CD burner and it is loud. I cannot stay in the same room when it reads or writes, it drives me crazy.

The Benq is fast, so it´s louder than many other drives.

YYour CRX 175 should be a Liteon, very loud drives.

Pioneer is reliable :)

I'm referring to unadjusted read/write speeds, where my Pioneer is considerably louder than the BenQ's. I use it strictly for burning, and the odd ripping job. Only complaint is the lack of booktyping for +R's (does auto do it for +R DL'S though).

yes, i am asking raw max speed noise both reading and writing. all the reviews i am reading refer to pioneer 111 as quiet. they say pioneer 111 does not have riplocak, so they should be testing it full speed. strange. maybe you have a bad drive.

Perhaps the 111D is louder than the retail 111's, not sure why that would be however. It's loudest upon closing the drive with an initial insertion of a disc, when it really "rev's" up and makes a fair racket. When starting the burn process it also gets loud(filling buffer etc, no physical burning yet), but to be fair it settles down in volume when actually burning. Burned discs give nice scans with DVDInfoPro (scanned with a BenQ 1655), so I doubt if it's defective.

i have pioneer dvr-a03, its noise is uniform whether loading the disc or burning.

i have sony crx175 cdrw, it acts like you say, spins up fast at first, then settles down, still very loud though.
