Guy almost gets shot by neighbor..

Postby Ian on Wed May 24, 2006 2:33 pm

Check this out. The guy's neighbor discharges his gun and the bullet almost hits him.

http://antiotter.livejournal.com/144625.html

Instead of posing in front of the mirror with his guns, the neighbor should clean his sink. Damn its dirty.

You keep your 12g loaded with slug? What do you expect to happen? Someone break in riding a bear?
A man has been charged after allegedly punching a 73-year-old woman in the face, breaking her nose and stabbing her in the arm with a corkscrew before hitting a second woman with a bottle at a wedding reception in the Whitsunday Islands.

I do too...3" Magnum slugs; although I sometimes use 3" 00-buck shot...

The magnums don't bother me at all anymore...I can shoot 'em all day and not even have a sore shoulder.

Hehee.. I never understood why Mossberg has a sight bead on that shotgun. A person would have to be stupid or a first time shooter to hold that gun up high enough to use the sight.

i am sadly shocked.
i am tempted to say that your words show just how little you know about firing guns.
i don't say that because i don't know how much you know, but you're definitely wrong here. it makes a lot of difference if you move the gun after you've pulled the trigger, and with a strong-recoil rifle and holding it casually like you say, it will be a very big effect.

you can take my word for it, LOL.
i was a lousy shot with a M16 in the Army, and that's not so bad a recoil as i gather that Mossberg gun is. and that was holding the rifle properly...

Not that anyone asked but its raining preventing me from working on my outdoor to do list. :P

Me thinks Dodec is talking about marksmanship, the second shot and survivability.

I would guess that the Mossberg Cruiser has about 5x the felt recoil of the M16. None of the gases/energy is used to cycle a round in the chamber plus it has a poor weight to powder ratio.

The Cruiser is definitely a punishing gun... Years ago some friends and I would hand load 300 Winchester Magnums ( plenty of recoil ) to near maximum pressures and shoot in long distance competitions. After firing a few boxes of twenty rounds we would start to get a little flinch prior to squeezing the trigger and accuracy would go in the crapper. For comparison, when shooting a Cruiser for the first time I wanted to throw it on the ground after 5 rounds, it hurt :P .

Unless someone is just having fun at the range, the Cruiser should have a laser mounted and held with the upper arm perpendicular to the gun and the forearm parallel to the gun barrel. That hold method allows for a faster and more accurate second shot. Physical discomfort from felt recoil isn't really a problem in a close range tactical situation thanks to adrenaline. But, felt recoil is a problem if it effects speed and shot placement on subsequent shots.

Curious, how come you guys use slugs instead of buckshot for short range protection?

Bill,

While your information is generally sound, I think it is pearls before swine.

I like the beer bottle cap infront of the m16 mag on the counter next to the sink.

I still perfer a shotgun with a "normal" stock...my Mossburg 590 has Ghost Ring sights, it they help - alot.

50+ yards w/3" Magnum slugs, rapid fire, and keeping everything on the paper? Yeah, it works...

Ahh, now I understand, the full stock version with slugs @ fifty yards.

I never shot anything with ghost ring sights..do you use both eyes or one? Do you have a good FOV either way?

Edit- While I'm bugging you, how far away from the eye is the ring mounted on your 590?

bill, I tend to keep both eyes open - unless I'm benchresting the thing for max. accuracy (I try not to with magnum slugs, though :) ).

FOV is good; with both eyes open it's a snap to bust clays with the thing. Just make sure the front sight + the clay are in the ring and pull the trigger.

Length of pull on the mossy is 14.5"; the sight is right above the trigger.

Here's a pic (sorta...not the exact model I have, but close...all the 5xx's are very close in specs):

http://world.guns.ru/shotgun/sh04-e.htm

Ugly color on that one, for sure...mine is all black & doesn't have the stupid looking heat shield on the barrel. Mine does, however, have the Speed Feed stock (the butt stock has a built-in shell holder on either side of it, each of which holds two rounds). Nice with the Side Saddle on it...

Edit:
DUH! Here's the pic of the one I have:

LOL!
If I was shooting that thing on the bench with 3 inch slugs both of my eyes would be closed!

OK, now you have me thinking about going to the shop and getting a 590SP. I'm not sure how I'll like those protective wings for the ghost ring but I definitely want to take a good look.

I have one more question for you if you have the time. If I'm reading the specs correctly the 590SP model holds seven three inch rounds in the tube. Those rounds add up to approximately 17.5 inches in the tube beneath a 20 inch barrel. Have you noticed any feed problems with the last couple of rounds?

I appreciate all the help. Been thinking about giving my plain jane 500 model to my nephew who discovered hunting last year. The hope being that he might be more careful if he feels like the gun is a gift from uncle.. Before I give it away this fall I would like to find a replacement.

Thanks again!
