Nero backitup - Buggy? Or just me/my kit?

Postby planetf1 on Mon Jun 12, 2006 5:14 pm

Hi, I have nero backup 2.2.1.1 (nero 7.2.0.3).

Regardless of whether I use
- version 1 format or version 2
- shadow copy or not
- different media types

I don't seem to be able to execute a 8gb backup (split disc) without verification errors of failures at some point in the process.

I've also looked at upper/lower filters & removed PXHELP20.SYS to no avail.

The writer is a brand new NEC ND-4571a, to which I've also tried applying the (iodata) firmware 1.21, up from 1.01 as shipped.

I've previously had the same problem with an elderly NEC ND-1100A, although that needed replacing in any case.

The system unit is a new Dell Dimension 5150, Pentium D 820 (2*2.8Ghz) with 1Gb ram. All copying is from a SATA 160Gb disk, although an IDE 120Gb disk is already present.

ideas?

Hi Planetf1,

Are you doing a file backup, or a Drive Backup?

I assume a file backup based on your descriptoin, but wish to be sure.

And this is with Shadow copy enabled? With Shadow copy disabled, I could see where some files would fail a verify, but with it enabled, there should not be an issue of this nature.

And normally, when you get a failed during a verify, Nero BIU will list the file name that is the problem, I've never seen it report a 'KEY_MEDIUM_ERROR" during a verify of a backup.

I assume you've tried more than one brand of media?

Are you able to restore the files? Don't overwrite the originals, just create a Temp folder somewhere, and try and restore to the Temp folder. And then use windows to compare the restored data with the originals to see if it's all there.

Craig

Just an update... I've been working through multiple media types & firmware (see http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=183519 ). I've tested I can create readable(maybe just ok) burns on dvd+rw

In addition I de-installed & re-installed Nero (same version)

I'm now going to try another backup in the next few days, potentially to all of DVD+R/DVD+RW/DVD-RAM

(I was using shadow copy, for a file backup BTW)

Just a quick question..

What is recommended format, if I'm not worried about backward compatability, for DVD-RAM?

UDF 2.6? (the metadata 2nd copy sounds helpful)

Same for DVD+RW

Or are there strong reasons to stick with 2.5 or even 2.0?

If your using Nero BackItUp wtih DVD-RAM media, then you will not have an option to select which to use.

If your using Nero Burning ROM, I would need to know what your plans are in regards to use or distribution of the discs you create.

For non-backitup use, it would be for backup/restore to same PC only. I have no other DVD-RAM devices, but am inclined to trust it more than DVD+RW for perioidically rewritten volumes.
