Adventures in Plextor-Land

Hello everyone.Story about me and my Px716-A.I buyed it last year in january so it was a bad one.Everything worked fine with my Px till one month ago when it started to make me head ackes.Started not to readd all DVD-s and in the final it was not writing or readding nothing.It died slowly and painfull yesterday night i burried him(put it on my closet).I dunno very much about writers and stuff like that but maybe you will find it intresting my method to bring it back so :

I went today and buyed a LG cheap one it won't last long but for 3 or 4 months it will do fine so i replaced it with my PX. Tonight i took out my PX from the closet put a powerline wich I have it since long time ago opened the plextor and I strated to repair it.I puted some fresh clean water on the lens and some vaseleine inside it then I closed it put it on my PC and put the powerline while the PC was working .... ofcourse a bum my pc shuted down (luckily i have ThermalTake Power Source and one UPS so my pc worked after i booted it).Well I wanted to test a DVD wich ofcourse not worked in the past and miracle he PX was reading it i said maybe it will write too and ofcourse the PX is writing now DVD-s with no problem.
Well that was a stupid thing to do with it but is working

My PX-716SA won't read CDs at all now :evil:

Oddly, still burns/reads DVDs fine :-s

Oh well...as soon as my new Samsung (yeah yeah, I know...but hey, I've got two BenQs, so I need a cheapie) gets here, the Plex is gonna meet my new buddy: http://i6.tinypic.com/1zdoz0x.jpg $\:D/$

My Plextor PX-712 can't read CD-Rs anymore, but reads and burns DVDRs just fine.

When the 716A first came out, I bought 4 of them. Within 6 months 3 of the 4 died. 2 stopped reading anymedia at all and the 3rd the tray refused to open at all. I replaced them with BENQ drives and have all performed flawlessly.

I have used old coasters to shoot with my shotgun clay pigeon style but never shot a drive. Sounds like fun.

I remember back when I bought my plextor it sucked bad had to exchange it a few times and finally sold it because it wouldnt burn alot of my media. Everyone told me plextor will be the best forever. Well ya know what my old pioneers are still my workhorse and kick the living sh** out of the plextor I had in media compatibility and they havent even updated firmware since the beggining of time now. So much for Plextors high price high quality crap.

Oh yes...I few Lite-On CD-RW & DVD-ROM drives that bit the dust were taken to the range. A .357 Sig & 3" Magnum 12 gauge slug round do wonders for optical drives - as well as one's frustions with the hardware

I think Plextor quality started suffering sometime after they went from an all-SCSI-all-the-time company to the IDE crowd.

I have a Plextor 40X Max and a Plextor 12x10x32x burner on a basic Adaptec SCSI card in my wife's system, and those are still working great. I think they cut corners trying to bring drive price down closer to other manufacturers as the market has become more cutthroat, but their prices are still higher, and yet I can get a better quality drive from NEC or Pioneer.

The only thing they offer above others is their SATA burners, but that's slowly changing (MSI has one I believe, and a few others are projected for the future by Benq and others).

My first Plextor was a PlexWriter 16/10/40A and it kept on running without a hitch until it was replaced with a DVD burner.

My first Plextor DVD burner was a PX-712A and it couldn't write to UltraSpeed CD-RW media with acceptable quality so it was RMA'd.

The replacement PX-712A has been chugging along nicely ever since - almost 2 years without a problem.

Since the newer Plextor drives have firmware that deliberately prevents them from being used with one of the most useful scanning tools (PxScan), I have chosen to vote with my money and not buy one.

So I have mixed feelings about Plextor.
