Plextor Japan Demonstrates PlexEraser

According to Akiba, Plextor Japan was demonstrating their new CD/DVD eraser. The PlexEraser is expected to hit the Japanese market next week.

From what I can gather, it uses an enhanced version of the PlexEraser technology found on the PX-760A. It writes over the leadin and data sectors, making the disc unreadable. I'm not sure how much of the data it actually writes over though considering it takes only 3 minutes to do a single layer DVD or CD.

I'm curious...why do that when one could likely buy a CD/DVD shredder for cheaper? Perhaps I just don't understand the unit's function?

According to Plextor, its environment friendly. They claim that when you shred a recordable CD or DVD, the dye can leak out.
