I've found that there isn't one package that will take core of all malware and spyware. In fact, some of the real nasty stuff is totally undetectable.

Personally, I use Windows Defender and occasionally scan with Ad-aware. I've also used Spybot and Highjackthis to find some of the more nasty variants.

I've never used avant so I can't comment. As far as it removing it all.. those programs will probably remove the bulk of it. However, you will probably need to use spybot and hijackthis to look at your computer and manually remove the nastier stuff.

If your computer is REALLY messed up, I highly recommend starting over and reinstalling Windows. Then, to prevent it from happening again, run Windows Defender in the background and DO NOT run as an Administrator.

A member (matt) here recommended I try Webroot Spysweeper.

I use it faithfully now and occasionally use Ad-Aware Pro as well.

See THIS for my experience with spyware/malwear.
