Not sure if this will actually happen, but:

Can this really be a good thing for the graphics card market?

I don't like the idea of the major tech companies being consolidated...

-Seagate bought Maxtor
-AMD bought ATI
-Intel may buy NVIDIA

I do not like the direction things are heading!

I'm not sure I'm liking it either, but one possible result could be that AMD and Intel will collaborate on bus standards and cross-license with each other, so that graphics cards will remain compatible with all mainboards.

I guess I'm trying to look for the silver lining, since there are some dark possibilities as well.

Well, indirect word from sources inside NVidia (meaning NVidia told my contact who told me) is that this rumour is either completely fake, or ultra top secret.

I'm hoping the rumour is false

Update:

http://digitimes.com/mobos/a20061009A2003.html

Instead, Intel, which currently holds about 8-10% of Nvidia shares, may seek to form a strategic alliance with Nvidia by raising its stake in the GPU (graphics processing unit) vendor, according to the sources.

The partnership would imply that Nvidia decreases product developments for the AMD platform and devotes more efforts to IGP (integrated graphics processor) chipsets for the Intel platform, the sources said.
