Output HDMI DVD Player To LCD Monitor?

Postby Ian on Sun Oct 08, 2006 2:36 pm

I'm fairly certain this will work, but I wanted to throw this idea out there to make sure I'm not forgetting something.

In any case, I have a new DVD player that has an HDMI output. Unfortunately, none of the TV's in the house support anything better than S-Video. If I wanted to test the player's upconverting capabilities, I could use an HDMI to DVI cable and hook it up to an LCD monitor, correct? I just want to see how the upconverting looks and at this point, I don't want to invest in a new TV. :P

Thanks in advance.

in your situation the hdmi to dvi cable would be the best possible picture

unfortunetly that will be very expensive for a good quality cable

$150ish for monster cable at best buy

but i bought one and i know they are with discount like $75

S-Video is still analog.
So I'm not sure how much benefit there wil be in converting a digital output from the player to analog S-Video input to the TV
as compared to player S-Video out to TV in S-Video.

All you would be doing is changing the location of the conversion.

What am I missing here?

OK, that is what I did miss, he is not going to his TV.

I guess that I still don't see what the comparison is against.

Playing the DVD in DVD-ROM and feeding the monitor with an analog cable?

Comparing that against the DVD player and the HDMI/DVI cable?
