CDRLabs DVD Writer Poll - September

Postby Ian on Sun Sep 03, 2006 9:56 am

Vote for what you think is the best, all around DVD writer. By doing so, you'll hopefully help those looking to buy a new drive. Once again, I tried to chose original drive designs that are currently available or will be soon.

Feel free to leave comments and an explanation as to why you voted the way you did. Also, if there's a drive you'd like to see added to the poll, let me know.

For reference, here's the top drives from August's poll:
1. BenQ DW1650/1655
2. Pioneer DVR-111/A11
3. LG GSA-H10N/H10L/H10A
4. (tied) LG GSA-H10N/H10L/H10A, NEC ND-4570A/4571A, Plextor PX-760A/760SA

A few notes... This is the last month for the Samsung SH-S162A/S162L. It's just not getting any votes so I'm going to drop it from the poll. On the other hand, the Sony NEC Optiarc AD-7173A and LG GSA-H30N/H30L have been added to the poll this month.

This month I'm going with the DVR-111 because I've heard some nice stuff about that and Acro Circle 16x DVD+R.

monthly poll

Great as my Benq 1650 scans are with Plextools, with the new 1.29 firmware, the Pioneer 111d scans are now just a bit better. The 111d is even giving me great cd burns now. (All with Ty media).

I had to make the switch from BenQ to the Pioneer DVR-111D this month also. The new firmware is nice, and it has quickly become my favourite drive of my collection.

I've been less than impressed with my 111D...I'll have to do some testing with the new firmware, though.

What sucks is CDSpeed won't work under Vista

Since installing 5536 friday, I've fallen in love :)
BenQ 1655, BenQ 1620, LG 4167, Plex PX-716SA, Samsung SH-S162L, SH-S182M, Pioneer 111D, Lite-On SHM-165H6S and 1.9TB of HDDs to feed 'em and an X2/4800 to crunch for 'em.

I've been testing a 111 based drive and I gotta say that I'm impressed. It's a hell of a lot better than that piece of crap 110.

The DVR-111 is by far the best thing to come out of Pioneer to date! The 110 was a laughable piece of junk. But it's odd how Pioneer can put out such incredible drives, and such pathetic drives all the time.

From my own experience, and reports/reviews, I would say this of their drives:
Good:
Pioneer 106
Pioneer 109
Pioneer 111

Bad:
Pioneer 107
Pioneer 108
Pioneer 110

I'm really sad to say I own both a 107 and 110 too :(

I thought the 107 was pretty good as long as you used good media with it (like TYG01/YUDEN0002). I still have my A07XL in my backup PC; oh how I wish the AxxXL models were still released in the US....

Yeah, I thought so too. I'm not sure how long I had it before I got my PX-708A, but it served me well while I had it.

Not to mention that I have a different one in my PowerMac G5, it's not used often, but it gets the job done.

Alright, I bit. I ordered a Pioneer DVR-111D from Newegg (for $31.99, BTW, a great deal!), so I'll see how it stacks up. I still like my NEC ND-3550A and BenQ DW1650 though.

Combine that puppy with Acro Circle 16x DVD+Rs and you'll be laughing

Flashed my 111D to a 111. It is now my fav also, change from ol' reliable 716A. I like the 1650 & 1655, but the odd issue's with some Verb media keep them from my #1 spot.

For regular media I like my 1655 still, for DL I like my 111, that currently has the 1.29 axl firmware on it but I still like the 1655 best as it does most normal stuff so well. I also have the new 182d samsung and it pretty much acts like a old school LiteOn, very fast at 18x, burns are Fair to good, some media it hates though are AWFUL, does DL slowly but tests well so far.
So far the 111 hasn't done any godlike burns on normal media, but its more consistent then the new 182d and faster at DL too.

It seems I'm not the only one that believes that the DVR-111D is the best successor to the BenQ DW1640 :D

Great, now that I'm finally switching to BenQ everyone is switching to the new Pioneer. :o ;)

My Lite-On LDW-851S has served me well with mostly CD-R burning with TY media, but it's time to move on as I start burning more DVDs. Hopefully, the CD-R burns will be just as good with the BenQ DW1655. 8)

In order for some one to vote for the right drive one must have experienced with if not all these drive but atleast with the first 5 ones or he or she must have prior knowledge about all these drive by reading all the post and members comments for quite some times.

Yeah, I haven't tested the burns I did on my H22L last night, but since it's out at retail and on sale at BB, it might be a good add.. seems like it's getting a lot of attention.

yeah, maybe the 'GSA-H10N/H10L/H10A' should be changed to 'GSA-H10N/H12' and add 'GSA-H20/H22' or something like that.
