BSLB. No question, the later firmwares were probably coded by Lite-On engineers, 1213S/1633S vintage!

Good write quality, basically.

I like BSOB,I tried the newer ones and went back because of write and read issues. If you want to use QSuite 2.1 you must use BSMB or newer:

QSuite will work with older firmwares. It just doesn't let you view the supported media.

My favorite f/w is also BSLB.

I only burn MCC 004 (@12x) and Yuden T02 (@8x).

Almost always 97%+ quality, somedays even better than that.

Speaking of QSuite, is there any reason to install the BenQ software at all?

I would absolutely install QSuite, so you can verify if the dvd+r is set to dvd-rom and what settings your drive is running. otherwise i generally run imgburn and dvdshrink for everything else.

Doesn't Imgburn already show this before burning (or at least it can be checked and changed if necessary)? Also, Nero InfoTool does all this as well I think.

i don't think InfoTool shows this. but Nero CDSpeed does.

QSuite has a FE/TE test to check the media quality. but i don't know much about it.

As long as it doesn't conflict with any other software I have installed, I might go ahead and install it and check it out. Thanks. 8)

My 1640 came with BSMB, do official BenQ firmwares allow downgrade so I can flash BSLB on it?.

Yes,flash away.I tried them all and went back to BSLB,DVD write quality was one problem and the newer ones have problems with audio CD's.
