CDRLabs DVD Writer Poll - December

Postby Ian on Thu Dec 07, 2006 11:39 pm

Vote for what you think is the best, all around DVD writer. By doing so, you'll hopefully help those looking to buy a new drive. Once again, I tried to chose original drive designs that are currently available or will be soon.

Feel free to leave comments and an explanation as to why you voted the way you did. Also, if there's a drive you'd like to see added to the poll, let me know.

For reference, here's the top drives from November's poll:
1. Pioneer DVR-111/A11
2. LG GSA-H22N/L
3. LG GSA-H10N/L/A
4. Lite-On SHM-165H6S/165P6S
5. Plextor PX-760A/760SA

we need a "best DVD burner of the year" poll... or something.
Punch Cards -> Paper Tape -> Tape Drive -> 8" Floppy Diskette -> 5 1/4" Floppy Diskette -> 3 1/2" "Flippy" Diskette -> CD-R -> DVD±R -> BD-R

Just curious why the Lite-On is getting such a large percentage of the votes. I thought Lite-On burners sucked these days. :o

I think there has been a slight resurgence due to the jitter testing and features like HyperTuning.

The LiteON 6S series are very good burners indeed, with great firmware support and lots of tools. That would be my choice, but unfortunately I can't get those easily where I live.

The 3S series was "suboptimal" but the later drives improved and the 6S drive I have is very good- almost like my 6S CD-burner. And like Ian said, there's a lot of tech goodies available (see my signature  ).

I voted for the LiteOn SHM-165P6S this time.

It's less quirky than my two Pioneer 111 series drives, which are so different from each other that I have to make different MID substitutions in firmware for the two drives in order to get optimal results, and one of them makes a huge jitter jump if I burn faster than 24x for CD-R or faster than 8x P-CAV/12x Z-CLV for DVDs.

So I'm not as impressed with the Pioneer 111 series. Two quirky drives can be bad luck, but I don't feel like being unlucky a third time.

The LiteOn is a solid performer, and it's a fairly good DVD scanner.
It's also one of very few drives I have that can rip CDS 200 protected Audio CDs properly in secure mode (the other being a NEC ND-3500AG and a Matshita UJ-840S laptop drive).

I would vote for the BenQ DW1655 if it was still on the poll however.
