Unable to burn Samsung (sh-s183L) SATA DVD using Nero

Postby Rambunctious on Sat Mar 03, 2007 5:59 pm

I am able to play/read DVDs from my new Samsung (sh-s183L) SATA DVD drive, I can burn CDs from Windows Media player, but thus far I have been unable to burn DVDs using Nero (6.6.1.4). New computer, XP Pro SP2. The event log is full of this error "(Event ID: 15) The device, \Device\CdRom0, is not ready for access yet."

Any suggestions? Help!

I was able to capture the error output from Nero on a failed 4x burn on Memorex 16x DVD+R media:

Can you try a different kind of media? Memorex is pretty much garbage that can cause all sorts of weird problems, although I am not 100% sure that will help in this case... it might be the version of Nero is too old that it just doesn't quite support SATA burners correctly, too.

That version of Nero does support SATA. I'd be more curious to hear what motherboard chipset or SATA controller its hooked up to.

Well crap, I didn't realize Memorex was poopy :( The package looked so pretty at Microcenter compared with cheaper generics.

Question: I do have some 1x (I think) Taiyo Yuden DVD-R I could try out. But as I recall, the lowest Nero would go was 4x, it wouldn't drop down to 1x. User error? I got tired of making coasters of my newer media

System spec:
Intel D975XBX2
Intel E6600
2 GB Patriot DDR2 800 (PDC22G6400LLK)
EVGA 8800 GTX
WD 250 GB SATA-II (3 total in RAID 0/5)
OS: XP SP2

The mobo has two RAID controllers. My 3 hard drives are in RAID configuration on the Intel Matrix chipset. The DVD drive is on the Marvel chipset side. I forget which is "Northbridge and Southbridge"

Nice system. If different media doesn't work, you might want to try it on the Intel side. I'm not sure how the Marvel chipset likes ATAPI devices.

Suppose its worth a test, but as I found from others with this mobo (it was on the Internet so it must be true) that putting the DVD over with the RAID could be a mistake - the chipset will keep trying to add it to the array for instance.

I got desperate and fired off the contents of these posts to Samsung ... wondering if I shouldn't write Intel (mobo) as well.

thanks for your thoughts

Well nuts. I really didn't want to do this but I tried it and it worked.

So does this imply the Marvell chipset is either bad or incompatible with that drive or software even? I would really prefer to take my DVD writer off the Intel chipset - I'm thinking about adding a 4th drive for the RAID there. Bah!
