12x and 16x DVD+R DL Media Coming In 2007

Postby Ian on Mon Apr 02, 2007 10:11 am

I haven't been able to confirm this news but PC Watch is usually pretty reliable.

http://www.watch.impress.co.jp/av/docs/20070402/dvd.htm

Translated from Japanese:

The DVD+RW alliance announced that on the 2nd, the version 1.2 standard regarding DVD+R DL 12/16 time fast record was decided.

In DVD+R DL of capacity 8.5GB, with the former 8 time speed, approximately 16 minutes the record time which was required, with 16 time speed becomes shortening possible to approximately approximately 9 minutes.

Concerning the corresponding media and the product, the possibility that it is shipped during 2007.

Yup, but the problem is that there are no drives even announced to support it....

And that only supports 8x DVDRDL media too, just some is overclocked to 10x.

Well hopefully! Although with no money to be made in DVD burners anymore, I have to wonder if there will be any incentive to do a proper job anymore?

Most drive manufacturers are too busy working on the next model or two to do a "proper job" on their current drives.

I'm sure that we will see a new 16x DL DVD writer model from all of the manufacturers near the end of this year (from the companies that are still left standing anyway).

But how many brands will focus on HD-DVD and Bluray?

With Blu-ray and HD DVD burners costing near $500 still, not many consumers are buying them right now. Optical drive manufactures will need to release 16x DL capable burners if they want to sell more drives this year.

Aside from LG, I really don't see many drive manufacturers focusing on Blu-ray and HD DVD. The market just isn't there yet so a lot of second gen drives seem to be on hold.

Well, Lite-On just began work on their second generation Blu-Ray drive, and their first gen HD DVD-R drive has once again been put back into the works.

It's nice to hear that SOMEONE besides Toshiba is working on an HD DVD-R burner. :-?
