New Pioneer Drives For The Retail Market

Postby Ian on Wed May 30, 2007 2:49 pm

I checked Pioneer's website today and noticed that they have a bunch of new drives for the US retail market. Some of these we've seen before.. others are new. Take note that not all are equal.

DVR-R200 (DVR-111C) - LightScribe and 16x DVD±R, 8x DVD±R DL, 8x DVD+RW, 6x DVD-RW and 5x DVD-RAM write

DVR-1810 (DVR-112D) - 18x DVD±R, 10x DVD±R DL, 8x DVD+RW and 6x DVD-RW write. Does NOT write to DVD-RAM.

DVR-2810 (DVR-212D) - SATA with 18x DVD±R, 10x DVD±R DL, 8x DVD+RW and 6x DVD-RW write. Does NOT write to DVD-RAM.

DVR-X122 (DVR-112) - 18x DVD±R, 10x DVD±R DL, 8x DVD+RW, 6x DVD-RW and 12x DVD-RAM write.

It's too bad they don't offer an internal model with 12x DVD-RAM write. Even the OEM models listed (DVR-112D and DVR-212D) lack this.

The r200 has been at frys here for almost a month now, be interesting to see if it can crossflash to label flash and support both formats...

Crossflashing back and forth between the LightScribe and LabelFlash versions is probably possible. What would be REALLY interesting is if someone was to hack them together to support both LabelFlash and LightScribe all in one single firmware. 8)

Geez, is it too much to ask for a DVD-RAM, Lightscribe-supporting, internal SATA Pioneer?!?

I swear, it's like these companies don't want to sell me drives. (well, more likely, they want to sell me 3 since I know my requirements are way out of line with the average)

Bah, I'll probably just import an A12XL from Australia via ebay.

You don't mess around.
Do you get more of your drives from other continents or from the US? :o

I just found out today that my DVR-212D's do not support overburning CD's. That was pretty annoying, I should have looked into it more deeply.

It would be nice to give them LightScribe support with a cross-flash, if that is possible.

Old prob with Pioneer-drives, but some drives could overburn to 83 Min or something

It´s a bit annoying, because the last NEC/Optiarc-drives could overburn to 99 Min (if I remember right)

I had heard that the lightscribe drives have additional hardware, so you could probably flash to a labelflash firmware, but not flash a lightscribe firmware into a non-lightscribe drive from the factory.

My ultimate Pioneer would be an internal SATA with lightscribe, 12X DVD-RAM write, auto-bitsetting for DVD+R SL and DL. I'd accept the drive without bitsetting if there was a hacked firmware for bitsetting and region free.

Still using the Pioneer DVR-111 flashed to a Buffalo with DVD-RAM and labelflash. Amazingly the Buffalo drives come with single layer bitsetting from the factory.
