For the staggering price of $217.99 just for Season 1! I love the original series, but $217.99!

Yeah, that is a damn hefty price, but I'm sure this will cause some die-hard trekkies to go out and buy an HD DVD player and this disc set.

For that price, they better come with a pair of Spock ears.

Some of them I'm sure.... but the bulk of the comments I've seen so far have been more along the lines of "wtf?!".

Even trekkies have a limit....
Punch Cards -> Paper Tape -> Tape Drive -> 8" Floppy Diskette -> 5 1/4" Floppy Diskette -> 3 1/2" "Flippy" Diskette -> CD-R -> DVD±R -> BD-R

That's crazy. I really hate how Paramount jacks up the price on the Star Trek season box sets. Everyone else sells them for about $35-$65 CAD, where as Paramount sell the ST season box sets at $118.99 CAD (which is 2-3x everyone else's price). My brother comments on this is that Paramount knows Trek fans will pay $$ for the series on DVD so they jack up the price to make more money.

I also like how Paramount took a page from the X-Files DVDs, once all of the series season box sets were released, Paramount started releaseing "special theme sets" which repeat the episodes one already owns. Lets's see, there was the "Captains set", A Borg set, a time travel set, and a few others that I can't remember. Just milking the cow to get more $$$.

I was debating for the last few days to buy this or not. I went to a couple of stores today and they didn't have it. I then went to Future Shop and they had one copy left. I was mulling it over for about 5 minutes and then said, screw it and I bought it. I don't know if the DVD side is the same as the HD DVD side. All the state is both sides have extras and the HD DVD side has a couple of extras (not fouind on the DVD side). I'm hoping in a about year, there would be affordable combo HD DVD/Blu Ray players to play the HD DVD side. (As usual, I'll stick this on the shelf and in about one year or three I'll get around to watching it).

No, I haven't opened it yet (I've only seen about 10% of the DVDs that I own. The other 90% are still sealed in the original plastic wrap along with the store's price sticker and will remain that way until I get around to watching them. I know, it's a little strange). The deal was that you had to purchase both the DVD set and a HD DVD player (Toshiba only???) in order to get the phaser remote. I'm not buy a HD DVD player so that's out for me. I don't know if it's possible to find/buy the remote on it's own.

I don't know if this has been posted before but here's some pics on the phaser remote control (looks nice but the colours are all wrong):
