HD DVD-R, HD DVD-RW and HD DVD-RAM in 2009?

Postby Henri Tapani Heinonen on Tue Feb 26, 2008 3:15 am

What is going to happen to HD DVD-R, HD DVD-RW and HD DVD-RAM discs and drives? Can I still buy them in the year 2009?

They do not make movies to HD DVDs anymore. Will they still use HD DVDs as data discs? This is a serious question.

I would like to store my data to HD DVD-R(W)s or HD DVD-RAMs...

Forget it (unless you mean High Defintion as in Blu-Ray). HD-DVD is dead. There's only been one HD-DVD burner (sort of) available for consumers, and it has miserable writing qualities.

Have a look here for more details.

LG is the only manufacturer who is still making HD DVD drives. I believe those are combo drives: HD-DVD Rom/BluRay Rom or HD DVD Rom/BluRay writer. These are popular with the HTPC crowd to play HD DVD and BluRay movies on their HTPCs using PowerDVD (or Arcsoft?). I haven't heard of any HD DVD writers and it looks like what HD DVD blank disks were out there are being discontinued.

I'm sorry, but I fail to see the point in petitioning to keep failed formats around. It's just not economically feesible :-?
