Forum Upgraded

Postby Ian on Tue Jun 03, 2008 12:21 pm

As you probably noticed, the forum has been upgraded to phpBB3. The overall look has been updated and a few new features have been added. We are still tweaking things so it may go up and down a bit over the next day or two.

With this upgrade, we decided to drop the Subscriber program. We are working to make the website advertisement free for current subscribers, but unless there is a big demand, this is not something that we will be carrying forward.

A few known issues:

- The list of forum posts on the front page isn't updating.

- The login menu on non-forum pages isn't working

- Current subscribers will probably see ads unless their old phpBB2 credentials have been cached.

This appears to be working now. I'm not sure why it wasn't before. :-k

The forums were down last night so that the search index could be rebuilt. It took a lot longer than I expected. In any case, search works again.

The little Login/Logout thing should be working again. If not, let me know. Next on my list is the subscriber stuff.

I take that back. It's not showing the logoff option now.

Looks good, unfortunately the pHpBB3 gets correctly flagged at work as a message board, whereas the old forum did not. I'll try to stick my head in now and then, but unfortunately won't be quite as often now.

Is there a way to alter the color scheme? I couldn't find it in the control panel. The new forums make it hard for my eye to pick out posts with new replies versus stickies versus posts with no new replies. I find myself having to look at the last post date now which makes browsing more cumbersome.

Yeah, I'm not too happy with the icons in this theme either. I'll see if I can find some different ones this week.

for now I just use the new messages thing at the top then also hit the latest message thing by the thread title, gets me right to last replay on messages that aren't e-mailed to me on new replies.
I do agree the colors are a bit similar to make it harder to navigate but sounds like Ian's on the case :-k

This will only effect those of you that were subscribers on the old forum...

Socheat has worked his magic and made the ad-free stuff working again. If you were viewing the website without ads before and you're seeing them now, send me a PM.

No offense to the Brits, but I couldn't take the GB English anymore. The forum has now been switched to US English.

I haven't noticed much of a change- how does this affect everyday use?

The ads are still there on the login screen (after logging in), but that's no problem, they're gone after that. However, now some sort of word tags show up in the posts, and these are more annoying.

Some questions on the subscriber's forum: is this now generally visible? Will it be phased out? My "subscription" runs out soon (if it hasn't already)- will I still see it then?

You probably won't notice the change to US English. It was just a few word spellings like color vs colour.

I'll look into removing the word tags for subscribers. I don't think it will be too hard.

The Subscfribers forum is still only visible to those that subscribed at some time in the past. If you see it now, your subscription isn't going to run out. I basically took everyone that had a live subscription and tossed them into a new group. This won't ever run out.

Well it ran out today and I just got a notice from PayPal that they've booked $10 for the auto-renewal. I'm not worried about $10- this site is worth it to keep it going (even if things have been rather quiet the last while). I don't use PayPal very much, though, so my question: do I have to cancel the auto-renewal or is this something that you look after on your end?

I'll have to ask Socheat about that. He's the one that set all that up. Thanks for the $10 though. It's much appreciated.

You have to go in and change it or turn it off. I just wait till mine expires and then redo it again rather then let it auto renew myself. I like this place too obviously and don't think coughing up 10 bucks once a year is a big deal to help out a little bit.
I don't see subscriber above my name anymore so I don't know if that's also something Ian need too tweak into it or if it's just different and doesn't show it anymore because I'd watch that and when I was close I renew again.
