Best DVD-RAM Media

Postby statl on Sun Aug 03, 2008 10:42 am

I have recently had problems with Panasonic DVD-RAM Media in my stand alone DVD recorder. Does anyone have any experience with the other brands of DVD-RAM media?

The Maxell 5x stuff I bought online seems to work OK, that's about as far as I can say because I don't use it a lot but so far no problems.

Maxell is the best IMO.

Maxell was manufactured by Maxell.... but I think that their 5x DVD-RAM is being discontinued. Actually, Maxell is dropping a LOT of their DVD-RAM products. They got rid of their cartridges, then their 5x 50pc spindles, and now they have 1 SKU for 3x DVD-RAM and 1 SKU for 5x DVD-RAM, and I think one DVD-RAM SKU in their video section packaged in a DVD case (not including the camcorder based DVD-RAM media).

Generally speaking I'd put DVD-RAM like this:

Maxell > Panasonic/Verbatim (same stuff basically) > Everyone else (I think Optodisc might be a little better off than Ritek and CMC though).
Punch Cards -> Paper Tape -> Tape Drive -> 8" Floppy Diskette -> 5 1/4" Floppy Diskette -> 3 1/2" "Flippy" Diskette -> CD-R -> DVD±R -> BD-R
