Panasonic SW-5584 8x BD-R Test Burns @ YSS

YSS has posted some of the first screenshots showing BD-R media being burned at 8x on the Panasonic SW-5584. The drive took 13:44 to write a 25GB BD-R and 27:22 to write a 50GB disc. I wish I could get some of that Panasonic 6x BD media.

By the way, any thoughts on what speed BD-Rs will top out at? 16x/20x or so again?

Well, considering they're using P-CAV here, I think they can easily reach 10x if they switch to CAV.

If they increase the RPM's, they could probably reach 12x or even 16x. This drive is spinning at only 8,000 RPM. The latest crop of DVD writers is at 12,000RPM so there's some room to play.

It does kind of scare me that we're already this far into the technology. If BD-Rs top out at 16x then we're probably 2 revisions before that point. At that point the pricing will just fall apart and the quality will once again go down the tubes.

Let's hope that Pioneer can make their 10 layer discs a reality. Otherwise the technology will soon reach its full potential.

I wonder if they can be cost effective though.... layering is pretty pricey. Even 2 layers is often pretty expensive to make.

Yeah right... I predict that recordable Blu-ray media won't get past 2 layers. Hell, we can still barely do double layer DVDR's right...

As various new "technologies" (I prefer to call them fields or, better yet, applications) come to the fore, and take their turns at being tried against Moore's Law, they will all benefit from the previous ones' development arcs, in that they will each follow that curve more rapidly to its apex than earlier ones. Just take a look at Wikipedia's Blu-ray and HD DVD pages' lists of alternative disc technologies... I think it'll be like the freaky crescendo at the end of "A Day In The Life" (of Vannevar Bush?) - where a certain singularity is reached, and we truly make a quantum leap to "Next Gen", where neither energy nor information is an obstacle, and "it really doesn't matter if I'm wrong or right - where I belong I'm right - where I belong..." (as I've been listening to "Sgt Pepper's", it perfectly segued in exactly that way!)... Whew! I don't think I'll even try to take this any further - either you know whereof I speak, or you don't...
