I can't say that I'm a big fan of ASUS's more recent drive designs. If you're looking for a 20x DVD writer, there are better choices out there.

Thanks Ian, any recommendations as to those better choices? I don't need 20X, just want a good, solid, all-around superior performing, quiet, internal SATA DVD burner. I don't entirely trust the polls to point me in the right direction. I've read the reviews here and it doesn't sound like there is a clear leader, or am I mistaken?

No, there really isn't a clear leader. If you're looking for a decendt drive to write single layer DVD's, I'd recommend something from Samsung or Optiarc. A lot of people like Pioneer's, but I'm still not convinced that their latest drives are worth the hype.
