Looking for Benq 1640 replacement.

Postby apvm on Mon May 11, 2009 6:40 am

My 1640 finally gave up on the disk scanning part....Nero CD/DVD Speed dsik qualiy scan is always 0 with PO failures when using the 1640 to scan even with known good burnt DVD...sometimes it will stop scanning after a few seconds...just sit there until I cancel the process.

I am now looking for a replacement that mainly for disk quality scanning? Any recommendations? I know nothing is better than the Benq but any second best for this task? tia

There really isn't much out there. Most people seem to be using Lite-Ons. You can now do jitter with them, but I still don't think they're as accurate as BenQ's for PI/PIF.

Thanks...I heard Liteon don't do jitter, how to enable jitter? If it is easy to enable, I'll get a Liteon.

You might want to try Ebay and craigslist as they do show up in various flavors new and used every so often. Sometimes they even go for a reasonable price 8) You also might want to try opening your drive and see if the laser pickup is dirty and just needs a cleaning, plus some of the other parts can get dirty and cause things to slip and not speed up properly causing issues.
The 1620 and 1650,1655 are also great scanning drives if you can find one.

Thanks, I'll try to clean it again and see but I suspect it is starting to give up.

Well if you've just recently cleaned it then you might be right, it's dying but if not maybe it's dirty again. Too bad they're still great burners and media testers, I still use my 1655 all the time and have a few extras from all their updates around or in use. Good luck .
