Newbie questions

Postby bellaireroad on Wed Jul 22, 2009 10:54 pm

Hello, this is my first post, and I have never made a dvd copy, but would like to backup some of my collection, especially since my sony mega changer went haywire, and destroyed about 100 of the 400 discs stored in it.

I have two DVD drives in my computer, and one will burn dual layer discs. Will any software out there burn a 1:1 copy without compressing the data? I would like to make an exact copy if possible, or is some compression inevitable? Since I'm new to this, reading through the different softwares available is somewhat confusing. If there is a link for a good recent tutorial, I'd appreciate it. thanks

Most movies will fit on a dual layer disc. Dual layer media can store less than a pressed dual layer movie, so there may be some cases where it won't.

Instead of compressing, you can rip out stuff like subtitles, audio tracks in other languages or movie trailers.
