Yeah, I think this one uses a Renesas R8BJ32710RFPV.

According to ala42, the BH08LS20 and WH08LS20 use the same firmware.

The used Panasonic and Renesas in their DVD writers... though, like you, I have no idea what is in the LG Blu-Ray drives... I am thinking about a blu-ray ripping drive though. How is the LG in that department?

Unless you want to patch your firmware, don't get an LG for ripping. They limit the read speed to 4.8x with AACS protected discs.

Download the latest firmware (I think its 2.00) and use MCSE to remove the riplock.

i looked at that thread and saw the screenshots, is mcse not really a firmware patch in the sense you don't rewrite the firmware with the riplock you kind of patch the drive on the fly without changing the firmware?

What is recommended for ripping? Who's the fastest, reliable, best value.

Is there some hope that Ala42 make a firmware-patcher for LG BD-drives?
