Well your regular dvd's will never cease to work unless you damage them and they are way cheaper so it's up to you. I try to only buy Blu ray now as I have all the goodies to watch HD and I like it better. The only problem is until recently all the movies were like 30 bucks a piece so I didn't buy a lot of them and still haven't. Last DVD I bought was idiocrasy or however it's spelled because it was 5 bucks and I doubt it will look a lot better in HD, besides I like the movie.
I think regular dvd's will be around a while longer as long as they insist on pricing first run block busters at 30 bucks when you can buy the dvd for 15 or less.
I was also buying HD-DVD movies during the format war, and right after when the prices on them dumped and have way more HD-DVD's then Blu Rays for now, they look and sound the same anyways.

Despite what Hollywood wants you to think, DVD isn't going anywhere any time soon. Blu-ray sales are still a drop in the bucket in comparison.

That being said, if you already have a BD player, I'd buy movies on Blu-ray. As Dartman pointed out, prices of new releases are a bit high, but if you wait a bit, most titles can be picked up for $20 or less. I've been picking up a lot of older titles that I don't have on DVD at places like Target for $10-$15.

You can buy a very capable cheapie Blu ray player now for around 100 bucks so if you have the budget for that it might be time to jump in. I paid 160 for my Panasonic BRD-10a back last summer or so just before circuit city folded up and it's slow and doesn't support some of the latest features but it's always played any movie I fed it, plus it supports AVCHD disks on regular DVD's.
They have newer ones now in off brands that support all kinds of new features and load fast for less then mine was now. I have seen older BD movies going for 7 to 9 bucks in stores lately so I might start buying more again too.
