ASUS Discontinues TS Mini Home Server Line

Postby Ian on Wed Jun 08, 2011 4:56 pm

ASUS is the latest company to drop support for Microsoft's Windows Home Server. To make matters worse, ASUS is no longer support its WebStorage service on the platform leaving many people (including myself) without a backup solution.

ASUS has confirmed that they have ceased development of their ASUS WebStorage add-in for Windows Home Server v1 and have discontinued the TS Mini Home Server line.

The add-in, released in 2009 alongside the ASUS TS Mini Home Server, offered all WHS owners a simple solution for online data backup, with management controls neatly integrated into the Windows Home Server Console. Users were offered 1GB free storage space as an incentive to sign up.

Developed and hosted by eCareme Technologies, the backup service continues to operate and Windows Home Server owners are expected to migrate to the standard desktop edition of the software. A company representative stated on the ASUS WebStorage blog that development had ceased due to ASUS discontinuing their TS Mini Home Server line

I use a Synology NAS (will go multiple at some point)... I think those are better choices than servers for home use anyway. Plus Linux and older hardware makes better sense. I'm not surprised on the Windows server front. I know a lot of the things earlier versions had the latest eliminated. Never used it.. drive extender or something.

Also, I can't imagine ASUS had huge success with their webstorage. They have a tough time keeping their ftp mirrors online.

Yeah, ASUS's web storage was pretty crappy. I had a lot of problems getting it to work and when I did, it was very slow. The only reason I was using it was that their server came with a year of service.

With Windows Home Server 2011 missing features like Drive Extender, companies like Acer and LaCie are now offering Windows Storage Server and Small Business Server with their home/small business servers. I will probably go with WSS the next time I upgrade my server.
