In House Review - Plextor PX-256M5P 256GB Solid State Drive

Postby Ian on Mon Sep 10, 2012 10:36 pm

Today, CDRLabs brings you a review of Plextor's new 256GB M5 Pro Series SSD, the PX-256M5P. Powered by Plextor's True Speed technology, this 7mm thick SSD uses high quality components like Marvell's new 88SS9187 controller chip and Toshiba's 19nm Toggle NAND flash to deliver up to 540MB/s read and 450MB/s write speeds as well as a maximum of 86,000 4KB random write IOPS. The M5 Pro also features an enterprise-grade double-data protection system to protect the integrity and confidentiality of your data. This system includes 256-bit AES encryption as well as Plextor's new True Protect technology, which ensures that data is stored and retrieved without error.

It's not cheap though...

Another great SSD from Plextor, but again to expensive for "felt performance"

Well, maybe the M5S someday gets cheap enough to buy

BTW, wahat can you do with Plextools ? Remember it only for optical media
Benq DW 1640 and 1650 , Plextor PX-755, Pioneer BDR-208 and 209D, LG GH24NSC0, LG BH16NS40 and 16NS55, Liteon ihas 124F and 324F, Pioneer DVR-215 and S21, Samsung SH-224DB and 224GB, and some more

The Pro versions are always expensive. I'd expect the M6S to perform nearly as well and cost a lot less.

Plextool for SSDs: plextor-release-plextool-utility-for-and-pro-ssds-t25635.html

I don't know what Plextor is doing with Plextool. The download link no longer works.

I ordered a second PX-256M5P and will be posting some RAID results one of these days.

Nope and after seeing some of the other reviews posted, I'm glad I skipped it in favor of the M5 Pro

It looks like a Crucial M4 with Plextor-FW and a bit higher priced.

But I think it´s ok for it´s price

Yeah, it was Plextor's attempt to break into the entry level market. The problem was that it really wasn't an improvement over the M3 Series.

Yeah, M3 had Toshiba MLC-Toggle 24nm, M5S have Intel 24nm MLC-NAND

But M5S is the cheapest Plextor

lol.. no, you won't. Upgrading from a HDD to an SSD is a huge upgrade. Anything beyond that isn't really going to be noticeable for everyday stuff. Now if you're editing a lot of videos or working with a database, you probably would.

Have a M5S 256GB and still think it´s a good bang for the buck :)

FW-Support is great, but still don´t feel any difference in something ^^

CDI can only show Host Write, not Read; it´s not extreme important, but itwould be nicer for statistics
