For the Maxell 100-pack, which manufacturer is generally better - Hitachi-Maxell or Ritek? And is there a way of telling them apart?

I doubt you'll get Hitach-Maxell discs. I have never seen Maxell actually selling them here in the US. You'll probably get Ritek.. and the Maxell Ritek's suck.

does anybody else notice that the maxell cd-r's stick together, they don;t seperate as easy as the other media and tend to cling to each other. also i believe that the memorex media is TY if it has the black screw top on it, can anyone confirm this?????

THANKS :)

This is in fact true. You have to look for the spindles that have black bottoms with a black screw on top, because these are made by Taiyo Yuden. It also says "Made In Japan".
Here's a pic of the different Memorex Spindles. The one on the left is Memorex made by Taiyo Yuden. The One on the right is a Memorex spindle made by CMC.

I noticed this is true of all cyanine dyed discs I have used. I don't know what it is about blue cyanine, but I have Hitachi Maxell and Sony discs that use cyanine dye and they stick together a lot. Discs that use pthalocyanine don't stick together as much.

Best Buy deals up to 11/16

Postby wE wE on Fri Nov 15, 2002 8:06 pm

I just went out to a local Best Buy store today to pick up my first CDR media based upon the HOT deal that was posted, but was unable to find the specified Memorex media in the 40x and 48x speeds made from Japan. SO I went to another Best Buy and found the 32x, 40x, and 48x, BUT the highest speed which was made in JAPAN was 40x, which I guess is better quality than the ones manufactured from TAIWAN. From my past experiences with other products from both countries I would have to agree!

I confirmed that the CDR's that are made in Japan DO have the black spindle cover on them while the clear covers were from Taiwan. Thanks for the hint on that!

I would assume that even though I bought the 40x CDR's made from Japan and not the 48x made from Taiwan, that I should still be able to reliably burn at 48x with my LiteON 48246S burner that I just purchased for 60.00!

That's all for now!

Just use Nero's media checker or Lite-On's Smartburn to check the max write speed on your Lite-On CD-RW drive.
