HP 50 CDR's (Made in Japan) for $4.97 at Sears

Got a hot deal you want to share? Need one?

HP 50 CDR's (Made in Japan) for $4.97 at Sears

Postby jjones on Wed Nov 20, 2002 11:51 pm

Sears has HP CDR's for $4.97. They are "Made in Japan" and supposedly made by TY.

There is no rebate to mail in and wait for. The local Sears did not even advertise this sale. I could only find 16x ones, but still it was a good deal.

Does anyone know what's the fastest speed these CD-R's will burn at? They're rated at 16x, but if they are TY, I have a feeling they might burn up to 32x or more.

Pretty Good Deal

The media compatability list has the HP 16X discs writing as fast as 24X on the LG GCE-8400B. That's the only drive that I have found results for.

I dunno, but at $4.97 you can't go wrong for Taiyo Yuden Media. I plan on using mine for audio duping, which I do at 12X anyway. Got the last 3 on the shelf at my local Sears store. Probably quite a few left at other stores since the price marked on them was $29.99 and, at least at my store, no indication anywhere that they are on clearance. :P

Good Luck! I burned a test disc with 694 Mb of mpegs @ 40x on my LTR-52246S and I didn't get any errors (if I ran that test right)! And they are Taiyo Yuden, down to their white screw on cap.

I bought the last four spindles at my local Sears store.

Thanks to jjones for the tip. :)

Do they work at 48x and 52x?

Or does SmartBurn limit the burning speed?, in which case 40x would be the max.

I take it that you are pretty happy with your purchase! I agree, these spindles are really high quality stuff! And the price is hard to beat, plus no MIR!!! :D I just wish that I had made it to the neighboring towns Sears before they sold out there! Anyways here goes my shout out:

SmartBurn suggested 40x. Still, not bad for 16x rated media. I did have that "unreadable" last block that CD speed is sometimes noted for, but I disregard that one as being the TAO bug. :-?

Or is it the DAO bug? I can never remember. Anyway, if I get all greens up until the last block I attribute it to that.

check out this discussion in the Ahead forum:
Help with CD Speed
according to the discussion there, you should not have the red block if you burn in DAO mode, but you should have it if you burn TAO.

so did you burn in DAO or TAO ?

I checked my local Sear's (Mesquite - Dallas, TX), and I saw none of these HP discs. The sales rep was unable to find them either. :-?

Damn! Thought I had hit the jackpot. I went to a Sears in Benton Harbor, MI and found 7 spindles of HP 16x on their shelves. I was just about ready to snatch them all up when I saw a red clearance sticker showing $9.97. I asked the clerk to scan one for me and they rang at $9.97, so I left them on his shelf. Either the price went up, or they are scamming an extra $5 off of these spindles (that might be a little harsh since they were $29.99). Anyway, for that extra $5 per spindle I might just as well get some of the Fuji 100-packs at BB! Oh well, a great deal while it lasted.

Even at $9.97, it's not that bad of a deal considering they are TY discs and have no rebates attached. Sure, you get the Fuji's at Best Buy for cheaper, and although Fuji and BB are very good with rebates, rebates are not always 100% guaranteed.

This deal can't be found online because these HP CD-R's are supposed to be on clearance. That's why they are at such a good price without rebates.
