problems burning at 16x with plextor 16/10/40A

Hi

Ok i have had this plextor burner for ages (about a year) and have never been able to burn at 16x, the higest i can burn is 12x and in the beginning i even had problems doing that. But finally 1 year later, it is getting on my nerves, and i would love to at least once burn at 16x speed.

When i try to burn at 16x it gives me errors, i have tried many different brands of media, and tried burning vcd's, as well as data. I have upgraded to the latest firmware, i am running
Windows 2000
Athlon 1.4
512mb ram
6 gig free.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
