All kinds of crazy DRU500A problems! Please Help

Postby Stereodude on Thu Nov 14, 2002 1:58 am

I got my DRU500a from Dell yesterday for $247 shipped. Apparently now I'm paying for my good deal in dead media.

I was able to burn an audio CD-R with no problems yesterday. Tonight I started on DVD-R, DVD+R, and DVD+RW.

DVD-R (Khypermedia 1x blanks):
Won't simulate correctly with Nero, Don't burn correctly with Nero (latest version), Don't burn correctly with Veritas Record Now

They all stop at the same point. Nero always turns back the same error.
Code: Select all
8:15:21 PM   #25 SCSI -1135 File Cdrdrv.cpp, Line 1388
SCSI Exec, HA 1, TA 0, LUN 0, buffer 0x027A0000
   Status:     0x04 (0x01, SCSI_ERR)
   HA-Status   0x00 (0x00, OK)
   TA-Status   0x02 (0x01, SCSI_TASTATUS_CHKCOND)
   Sense Key:  0x03 (KEY_MEDIUM_ERROR)
   Sense Code: 0x0C
   Sense Qual: 0x08
   CDB Data:   0x2A 0x00 0x00 0x02 0xBB 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x20 0x00 0x00 0x00

               0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x0C 0x08

Here's what Veritas spit back:
Code: Select all
Disc Write Error  -  Sense:03 ASC:0C ASCQ:08 (Command:2A)
--------------------------------------------------
Sony DVD RW DRU-500A (Q:) ATAPI  (1.0d)

MSCOMCT2.OCX   -          6.0.88.4
PXHelp20.SYS       -          2.2.38.0

I've ruined 2 DVD-R's so far and have tried to simulate on the rest. I have tried both firmwares with no luck.

DVD+R (Verbatim 2.4x DVD+R):
Can't simulate with these and I have no idea why. They burn all the way to 100% fine and then quit with the following error in Nero
Code: Select all
9:14:32 PM   #18 SCSI -1066 File Cdrdrv.cpp, Line 1184

The error that you can see in Nero window is something about illegal mode, unable to close disc. I've tried multisession w/ leave disc open, DAO w/ finalize. No dice.

I did not try Veritas.

DVD+RW (Verbatim 2.4x +RW):
Works fine in nero. Haven't tried Veritas.

I'm running a AMD Athlon 1400 Win XP SP1. I previously had a HP 9900i in this PC with no problems.

I see other people have managed to get Khypermedia to work correctly. I'm going to try the drive in another PC tomorrow.

1) If you upgrade your firmware to 1.0d, it will solve most media issues.

2) Try Stomp RecordNow Max 4.5

3) If you use Veritas RecordNow 4.5, be sure to enable
Lossless Linking in the options.

Since getting my DRU-500A about 15 days ago, I have successfully burned the following:

TDK 2X DVD-R

Sony 2.4X DVD+RW

Philips 2.4X DVD+R

KHypermedia 1X DVD-R

DVDPro 1X DVD-R (silver top)

Princo 2X DVD-R (white glossy top)

Princo 1X DVD-R

Prodisc 2X - the only brand I had any problems with (one batch worked; the white inkjet printable ones didn't work, but that was with the old firmware). Just got a sample today; will test it tomorrow.
NOTE: Prodisc just discontinued these, because they weren't happy with the quality...

I did have a few coasters with a few DVDPro when I first used RecordNow, but that was because I played with the Lossless Linking setting. I then burned the same media again (with the old firmware at the time) and all went fine. Have burned several since, without any problems.
Burners only:
Pioneer DVR-115D
Pioneer DVR-111D
Plextor PX-716A TLA0304
Plextor PX-716A same TLA

LiteOn 52327S 52X CD-RW

Veff- Take a closer look at his error logs. He already has 1.0d.

VEFF,

I have 1.0d. The same problems occur with and without it.

Here's two screenshots from Nero to show the lack of a simulate option on DVD+R and the error that I get on the end of Verbatim Blanks.

I guess I'm going to Best Buy to buy a bunch of different brands of -r and +r to try.

Lossless linking is and has been enabled.

I'm trying one of the Verbatim 2.4x +R blanks in the drive now (but I'm expecting a frisbee).

I have found my first sucess on DVD+R.

Veritas RecordNow 4.5 on a Verbatim 2.4x DVD+R blank was sucessful with default settings with firmware 1.0d. I started another blank Verbatim 2.4x DVD+R in Nero to see if the firmware will solve the Verbatim DVD+R problem. I will check it when I get home.

Veritas fails burning and Nero fails simulations on Khypermedia DVD-R at 1x with firmware 1.0d. The firmware did not solve this one.

Thanks for pointing that out Scott.

stereodude:
I have only used Nero once for my DRU-500A to be honest, so I have no personal experience in terms of how reliable it is with the DRU-500A, and I can't give you any feedback there.

Side note: I don't use Nero for the following reason:
Nero cost me about 8 "semi-coasters" (at $5 and up a pop back in March 2002) with my previous DVD burner (they play in my Apex, but NOT in my Xbox or Toshiba DVD changer).
Nero STILL doesn't seem to have fixed this file system bug with their 'DVD video' compilation type.
It was in their changelog as having been fixed, but if you look at the compilation type's properties/tabs you'll notice that the UDF filetype tab (they said they fixed the UDF bug) isn't even there (even in 5.5.9.17)!!!
I also tried DVD-ROM UDF/ISO compilation type (with older versions of Nero) and got the same results.
Thank God I have more than one DVD player; if I only owned the Apex, I might still be using Nero for DVD video discs.
I switched to Stomp RecordNow Max (4.0 at the time) and haven't looked back - the DVD video discs it creates play in all three of my home DVD players.
Maybe it really is my players, but in any case, Stomp discs work in all of them, so I will continue to use it...

I guess you either got a different batch of KHypermedia or a bad batch.
I'll tell you what: I will burn a data DVD-R disc with Nero tonight ( no DVD video; see above why). This way we can see if it is the media or the software.
I am leaning toward the cause being your batch of media (I mentioned that different batches of Prodiscs gave me different results - the discs had changed in appearance from the previous design).

Let's nip this in the bud.

nero 5.5.17.1 has a bug - closing session for all DVD+R's on Sony.
downgrade to 5.5.17, that works ok or wait for next update.
5.5.17.1 was silently released on nov,7 where original 5.5.17 was released on nov,1
check vcdhelp.com forum, i had a thread there on this issue.

Ok, so this should resolve all the problems except the K Hypermedia fiasco. Now to return the other 5 pack to OfficeMax and find some other good inexpensive blanks locally.

DVD+R Error and Nero

Postby Nemesis on Tue Dec 03, 2002 8:38 pm

I've been experiencing these errors with Nero and Verbatim DVD+R discs for the last few days.

Right now I am closing the track and then the disc with DVDDecrypter and the discs work fine. It appears that all the data is on the disc after I closed the session. A work around for now, but I'd like to know if it nero's problem or a hardware problem.

Just an FYI if you need to use need to use Nero to burn

Nero

Postby Nemesis on Tue Dec 03, 2002 9:54 pm

My Nero About says 5.5.9.17 and the archive i installed from is nero55917.exe and it won't burn DVD+R, unless they did not change the name of the release file and the about for 5.5.9.17.1 which they probably didn't. I am searching for a good nero55917.exe dated before nov7 hopefully i can find one.

You said you used Record Now 4.5 is that record now max 4.5? I just been to be able to burn these nero would be cool, but I don't care as long as I don't have to use two programs.

Copying DVD movie titles? DVDxCopy which is rather expensive and CloneDVD which will be released next year. Anyway, most Hollywood movie titles use discs over 4.7GB.
