Failed Yamaha CRW3200UX

Postby Halc on Thu Dec 12, 2002 11:47 am

My Yamaha CRW3200UX (external USB 2.0) produces the following symptoms:

- Visible in device manager and in "My Computer"
- Cannot recognize any discs as a cd-reader
- cannot be accessed through any ASPI layer anymore (which previously worked ok!) via CDRWin/Nero/other programs: all just try to access the device, but time out
- Firmware updating does not work (can't even get to the update part, it says: device not responding)
- Trying to use this Yamaha USB drive on another computer fails already at driver installation point with: device not responding

That looks pretty much like another dead Yamaha CRW3200 drive to me?

Is Yamaha having (again?!) quality problems. It seems there are quite a few replaced/broken Yamahas on this board alone.

I starting to wish I would have bought another Plextor... <sigh>

Any comments?

regards,
Halc

It sure sounds dead. Is it still under warranty?

Does the disc spin-up and the LED flash when you put a disc in the drive, or does it sit completely dead? If it does spin up, does it do it with the same vigor as before?

Yes, the drive was broken. I got a replacement drive and it works with exactly the same connection, drivers and settings.

I hope this one lasts.

I've been busy with other things and got sidelined during summer due to more urgent matters. I had to postpone the CDR longevity test. It's still on the shelf waiting to be done though :)
