Saturday night special from CeQuadrat: free WinOnCD 5 PE

Easy Media Creator, Toast, RecordNow, MyDVD, WinOnCD, DLA, etc.

That's awesome. Thanks Spazmogen.

You could always just burn it with your new program WinOnCD and backup the License. Therefore you don't need to download it over and over again.

dodecahedron wrote:Han, can you tell me if it is possible to create data CDs with long filenames with WinOnCD 5 PE ?
by long filenames i mean longer than the 63 character limit of Joliet, which is enforced by Nero.

if so this would be HUGE plus for me.
if so, do you know what the actual limitations are? number of characters in the filename? how many directories deep? total pathname of a file?

and once again thank you very much for the tip! :P 8)

In ISO 9660 / Joliet Properties there is an option to "Allow long file names for NT (128 characters)". I suppose that this means that it is usable only in WinNT (2000, XP ??), but I don't know for sure as I haven't tried it.

If "Generate Joliet file system" is checked, then WinOnCD will prompt for a name change if it is longer than 64 characters. Maybe this option has to be disabled before the 128 character setup above can be used, but again I haven't experimented with it.

The ISO 9660 standard allows directories to be nested up to 8 levels deep. WinOnCD allows this restriction to be disabled, but the disc may not be readable on some systems.

I just made a temp folder for the install and put everything into that. I'll burn everything to cd-r on Monday.

I did the same thing with Norton Personal Firewall 2002 download version. It also used the Vbox Installer program.

I was able to install and run the program and all is fine. I just need a few hours to play with the software now.

i see that the WinOnCD comes with DirectCD.
a few questions to knowledgeable guys (Han?):

is this basically the same as the DirectCD that comes with ECDC?

can DirectCD be installed without the WinOnCD? (the setup.exe in the DirectCD directory of the download?)

is it possible to update the DirectCD? as far as i can tell, the downloads from Roxio are upgrades for ECDC + DirectCD. i don't have and don't want ECDC.

and last question: i want to install WinOnCD and experiment, but i'm a little concerned. can it be nicely removed from the system, or does it install inextricably, and leave stuff all over the place and the registry like ECDC does?

DirectCD doesn't differ between WinOnCD and ECDC programs, it's the same.

Bundled DirectCD can not be installed without WinOnCD present. It looks for WinOnCD...

Yes, it's possible to update it, but not thru ECDC update. Roxio posts special DirectCD updates for WinOnCD users.

WinOnCD has a very clean installer. From my experience it doesn't affect the system in any harmful way.

Shit, got there late. Got the wrong download time. I stay in India and my timing conversion was wrong by 4 hours. Anyway, I wouldn't have made it because mine is a dial up.

Hey Spazmogen,

How about mailing the VBox installer and CdKey so that I can use it to download it sometime? Mail Id: arunkumarvk@rediffmail.com

Thanks Pal in advance...

that's what i expected.

Han wrote:Bundled DirectCD can not be installed without WinOnCD present. It looks for WinOnCD...

this is just like ECDC...too bad...

Han wrote:Yes, it's possible to update it, but not thru ECDC update. Roxio posts special DirectCD updates for WinOnCD users.

is this like ECDC, where the same updater updates both the ECDC and the DirectCD?

Han wrote:WinOnCD has a very clean installer. From my experience it doesn't affect the system in any harmful way.

that's very good to hear! :D :D :D
i sure am going to install it, then, and experiment.
(i remember that you often recommended and praised this program, so i'm sure it's good). let's see how it stacks up against Nero.

any comments from other experimenters of WinOnCD? i know most guys here are Nero users, so what's your opinion of WinOnCD?

Well, I think I have somewhere a DirectCD 5 that can be installed standalone.

The updaters for WinOnCD and DirectCD are separate.

Another plus for WinOnCD is that it uses an uniDRV driver pack to support new devices.

Personally, I prefer WinOnCD over Nero, mostly for its easy to use and comprehensive user interface. Version 6 has the best help ever. What bothers me is that you can't minimize the program while burning. - You have to use "Show Desktop" button to open other applications...

yes, i've seen a post once before. someone said he had the Easy CD Creator + DirectCD installation disc, and could install just DirectCD by going to the DirectCD folder and running the installation program. that's why i thought maybe i could install DirectCD without WinOnCD - there's a DirectCD folder with a seup.exe file.
there was also a 'rogue' DirectCD 5 once floating around on the net that could be downloaded and installed independantly.

thanks for your help Han. i will try WinOnCD (when i have some spare time to play... )

Looks like my luck has run out. I had downloaded around 77MB of winoncd 5 PE when I got this message:

"(1116)The maximum installation count has been reached. Contact cequadrat"

Any solution.....

The offer was only good for four hours Saturday night / Sunday morning the 14'th and 15'th, so there is no reason to expect to be able to take advantage of it now. That is the nature of a limited time offer. Sorry, but you simply missed out.

LOL.

I forgot about this until I found the CD I made of the software while on a cleaning binge.

Its installed on my kids computer (minus the Direct CD part).

It lives again!

I kind of made that up in the ADMIN panel one day.

OK, I was a bored civil servant one day @ work and went rummaging about in the ADMIN section and discovered how to make them up.
