LTR-48246s wont burn CMC media at 8x

Postby M17 on Fri Dec 20, 2002 10:56 am

I run into a funny problem with my LTR-48246s.
I still got some old Imation/CMC media it is rated 1x-8x. Smartburn tells me that it can do 32x max. Ok so I try it at 8x, audio cd, ccd. The resulting cd is no good, barely plays in my cd player with all kinds of destortion. Well I burn another one this time 16x, now I can play the cd fine. 4x and 24x also are playable and sound good, no destortions. I try another one at 8x and still the same problem. Looks like my burner can't not record to that media at 8x. I recorded to cdrw media at 8x and it works.
Any ideas why it would have truoble at 8x with that media??
Thanks

What exactly do you mean by barely plays and all kinds of distortion? Does it take a while to read the TOC or change tracks? Clicks, pops, drop outs? Did you try the same CD on a different player? Try running Nero's scandisk and compare the results with discs recorded at other speeds.

I generally don't record at lower than 16x so I haven't ran into any problems with lower speeds.

On my computer, w2k cd player, one cd plays with clicks and pops, it pauses at times, and the voice of the artist is very distorted.
2and cd first track plays for 3 sec with all clicks and pauses, and then it skips to second track, remaining track play with clicks and pops, voice is destorted.

On my sony cd player both cds play the same way, track one nothing but clicks and pops, min:sec counter seems to jump, I can skip to second track, it wont play at all, no min:sec counter. Remaining tracks also just clicks and pops, min:sec counter seems to work.

I run a nero scandisc, it was just red at the beginning of the dics, so I just stop it. I know the disc is bad, but why would it be bad?

Do you know what is the max error rate that wses will report.
3000.
Thats how many errors my disc had.
WSES11.PCX
WSES12.PCX
WSES13.PCX
WSES15.PCX
Some of the cds could not have been fully read.
WSES14.PCX
WSES16.PCX
All these cds are Imation 1-8x, and have been recorded at 8x. None of them can be played in a cd player. My burner was LTR-48246S with SS09 firmware.
3000 could also be the max rate that my LTR-48125W will report.
I'm very unhappy with the quality of liteon in this case.

No surprise here, Lite-On has a history of not performing well with Imation media. Look at the media compatability thread and note all the --at the end of the Imation lines. -- means unsuccessful.

Honestly Wiz, don't give them such a bad name. 80% of my blanks are CMC and they seem to have no problem on my Memorex/Liteon 48246S, though I rarely burn at 8x for audio. Whether they survive for 5 to 10 years remains to be seen, but until we start seeing some FAR TY deals, I'll just keep accumulating more CMC's.

Far me it from me to give CMC a bad name, heck, I have many CMC discs and I actually like them! I'm just pointing out that, on the average, Imation/CMC discs don't perform well in Lite-On burners. Other CMC discs perform fine in Lite-On burners, which is strange to say the least. The CMC discs that you own may not be Imation. :)
