DRU-500A VERY slow reading DVD-R; DVD-ROM MUCH faster!?!?

Postby VEFF on Tue Dec 24, 2002 7:37 am

I am trying to determine if this is somethign others have experienced.

I burned about 4 gigs of data last night onto a silver top DVDPro DVD-R, using my DRU-500A (firmware 1.0f) and Nero 5.5.9.17 ( I will upgrade to 5.5.10 today; haven't used nero in a while).

The disc takes FOREVER (if at all), to read back on the DRU-500A.
I end up ejecting the disc, so that explorer no longer sits in "Not responding" state.

I tested it on my two hooked up DVD-ROM drives (haven't switched one of the two DVD-ROM drives out for the Black Friday LTD-163 yet), and they both (a 12X BTC and a 16X Artec) read the disc fine, and VERY quickly.

Have others noticed this reading issue?
I am about to burn some more data (with a Princo 2X DVD-R this time).
I will see if that makes any difference.

I don't care if it is only a DRU-500A reading issue, since I don't plan to ever use it for reading, having two faster and cheaper DVD-ROM drives already.
I only noticed, beauce I was just checking the disc I had just burned.

I just wanted to ensure that it wasn't the burn that was somehow causing the problem, but then why would both DVD-ROM drives work fine...

Thanks!

Looks like it is the media/drive combo that is causing the problem:
The 2X Princo DVD-R I just burned reads fine in my DRU-500A; the DVDPro, as previosuly stated, does NOT.

BOTH read fine on my DVD-ROM drives.

Along these same lines, I cobbled togther a small system the other night that did not have room for my customary Pioneer trayless (slot) A06 drive for reading. It wound up with only an A04 for both reading and writing. I ripped one of my movie DVD's on it and I was shocked at how fast the A04 reads! I normally use an A06 and did not expect the A04 to read that fast, especially since I have been reading on the forums about how slow the A05 and Sony read. (2X) I don't have a definite speed for how fast it read but it ripped this movie in about 15 minutes. I know that is not terribly fast for an A06 but I did not expect a burner to be able to read at those rates!
Is this normal for a burner to read that fast?
Anyone else ever tried ripping with an A04? Just an interesting thought. I wonder why I have all of these A06 drives? (4) :)

........
Have fun.........Bob
