A different CD-RW means a new Nero ?

Postby HeartBurn on Mon Dec 30, 2002 11:17 pm

My son reinstalled WinME on his computer yesterday. He has a LG CD-RW and uses CD Easy Creator. Since he had never used Nero before he wanted to try it to back up files before he formated his hard drive so I let him install my copy that I got with my LiteOn 32123S. When we went to use it Nero said that this copy only works with the CD-RW that it was packaged with. Am I to assume that when I get a another CD-RW that I will have to buy one that has Nero included or go out and buy another copy of Nero?

Usually the Nero that comes bundled with CD-RW drives will only work with that specific manufacturer. For example, when I got my newer TDK VeloCD 48x24x48, I was able to continue using the Nero that came with my older TDK VeloCD 12x10x32 CD-RW drive. However, the TDK specific Nero would not work with my Sony USB CD-RW drive. In your case, the Nero that came with the Lite-On drive will only work with Lite-On drives and not the LG drive your son uses. If you would like to continue using Nero on future drives, I would consider purchasing a drive from a brand you already own or purchase a drive that is bundled with its own copy of Nero. However, when you install the nero that came with your new CD-RW drive, you must uninstall the previous version of Nero that came with the older CD-RW drive if its not the same brand. The best way would be to purchase an OEM or retail version of Nero that can be used on ALL CD-RW drives.

Many thanks... Looks like I'll be buying a retain version of Nero because I like it a lot better than what my son is using. Appreciate the advice.

You might want to take a look at these two threads:

http://www.cdrlabs.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=8063

Probably the most relevant portion for you, since you have decided to upgrade to the retail version, is that you can purchase a serial number upgrade of your OEM version to full retail for only $19 directly from Ahead:

https://secure.nero.com/en/Wizard.asp?Item=230

You still may want to look around to see if you can get a full package for less. It has been known to happen.

Oh Yes ! Thank you cfitz. I thought I checked this forum out pretty good for info on this subject but I guess I didn't do a very good job of it. Thanks again, appreciate the help.

One hell of a pain when you've got two burners from different manufactures...no way I'm shelling out more $ just to get the stupid program to work on both burners when it came with both.
