Postby EdT on Sun Dec 29, 2002 8:13 pm

Ever wonder how they came out with that name or why? Do any of you notice that on a Lite-On drive, the green LED comes on the second you start your computer while on other drives it comes on later and only for a brief second ? what are you thoughts especially from those of you in bed with Lite-On, I'am a drive whore, whoever has better price vs quality and performance I get ! ...hehe

I don't know where the name came from. It's probably just some weird translation of something...

I bet there is a funny anecdote behind the name Lite-On. I can picture two guys sitting in a garage trying to assemble a CD-ROM drive from scratch, yet with no success. Finally, after much tinkering, the light on the drive suddenly flashes and their drive is alive! They turn to one another an exclaim, "Lite on! Lite On!!!" And that is how they came up with the name. Although, why they spell Lite the way they do is beyond me. Since the firm is Taiwanese, maybe their English is a little off?

I didn't want to have to do this, but...

They started out in 1975-76 as a manufacturer of LED's for digital clock displays:

So, they have been in the business of building devices that light up (Lite-On after the requisite marketing mangling) since their very beginning decades ago.
