Some are louder than others, but to put it simply: yes they are loud.

Would it be better to get a 48x burner? I also noticed the Lite-On drives have white trays. I guess white tray's arent good for noises and black tray's are?

Like noise from rotation speed and vibration? The color of the tray doesn't make a difference.

I have 40x, 48x, and 52x LiteOn drives. the difference in noise level is proportionale to the difference in RPM, but I would not call any of them "loud". 4 case fans are "loud", the drives are fine. I suspect that case design, mounting style and location have more impact on noise than the speed of the drive does.

Burning at 52x will make more noise than burning at 48x. If you were to burn at 48x on a 52x max drive, it would be about the same loudness as burning at 48x on a 48x max drive.
