Mitsubishi describes new laser technology that substantially boosts optical disk speeds.

Mitsubishi Electric has developed a more powerful semiconductor laser that should pave the way for 16X DVD writers to be commercially available by about 2004.

does this mean there is a way for cd burners to go over 52x without actually spinning faster? :o

I highly doubt it. We won't be seeing anything faster than 52x for awhile. The next CD-RW drive to be released sometime in the future will be 52x32x52. Other than that, no news about anything faster being released.

Not really. Do you really need to save 2-3 seconds off your burn time?

I don't think it would be that much faster. The difference between 48x and 52x writers isn't that much. I really doubt a 56x writer would be much faster than a 52x.

Saving 30 to 60 seconds off a CD burned at 52x would be physically impossible with the current CD technology we have. I highly doubt any CD's would be able to stand up to the high RPM's of such a drive.

cd's aren't garenteed to break in a 56x or more. there would be like a .o9 percent chance that will happen.

No, how exactly do you hope to burn faster if you don't spin faster ?
