computer crashes when blank cdr is inserted

Postby joep2k on Sun Jan 12, 2003 6:20 pm

i just installed a promise pci ide controller, and now when i insert a blank cd into the cdrw whether it be in the sec master or slave on the ide card my computer freezes.
When i install the burner on the motherboards ide controller, it works.
I bought the ide card for higher speeds and i'd like to make use of it.
any help is appreciated. thanks

Hook up your hard drive to the Promise ATA card if you want to use the high speed transfer. Leave the CD-RW drive as Secondary Master on the IDE controller on your motherboard. The fastest a CD-RW drive will support is ATA33, so its basically useless to hook up a CD-RW drive to the Promise ATA card. Even with the ATA33 (33 MB/s), the transfer speed between the computer and the CD-RW drive will never reach that speed. If motherboard on your system already supports ATA100, I would just return the Promise card, as its useless to you unless you need the extra IDE controllers.

And if you wondering why there are no ATA66 or ATA100 CD-RW drives, just read the following thread.

Go with what BuddhaTB said.

I had a Pioneer DVD-ROM Model 116 attached to a Promise ATA133 controller, secondary channel, each time I accessed the drive, it would freeze for a few seconds. Moved it off back to secondary channel on mobo.
